Baggy pants trip up fleeing suspect
Police link juvenile to violent crimes
    Thursday, January 25, 2007
    By Paul Rioux
A 16-year-old robbery suspect who had eluded Covington police on several previous occasions was arrested after a wardrobe malfunction: His loose-fitting pants fell down, causing him to stumble as police chased him.

"We literally caught him with his pants down," Lt. Jack West said.

Suspected of robbing a man at gunpoint and stealing another man's car after beating him with a brick, the teenager had run away from police several times in recent weeks, West said.

So when an officer spotted the teen standing near the corner of 31st Avenue and Van Buren Street on Monday, he waited for two backup officers before trying to make an arrest.

"They all converged on him from different directions," West said. "He started to run, but his low-riding pants fell down and he stumbled to his knees."

The suspect, whose name was not released because he is a juvenile, was booked on warrants for armed robbery, carjacking, two counts of aggravated battery and being a child in need of supervision.

West said the suspect and two other teens allegedly hit a man in the head with a brick Jan. 14 in Peter Atkins Park in Covington, took his keys and stole his car, which was parked nearby.

The teen also is accused of robbing a 35-year-old Covington man at gunpoint Nov. 2 at the intersection where he was arrested Monday. The suspect and at least two other teens allegedly beat the man before stealing his wallet and his pants, West said.

Police are searching for the suspect's accomplices, West said.

I read that yesterday, its a pretty funny image.

That area is getting worse and worse. It is a small section of covington. There is a time saver type place right accross from that park where there is always about 20 cars parked with people hanging out and dealing drugs.

They have been having a "crackdown on drugs" there for as long as I can remember.

It is also about 3 blocks from the parish jail and the new post office. I assumed they would have cleaned it up a bit after building those things.

I have often looked at the baggy pants and thought - ''those might be your downfall'' - well this was a good example

Same for those winners that wear their jeans below the butt, showing their underwear, with a belt tightened more attempting keep them there. God, I hate that!

I just want to whenever I see them!

Haha, me too - and I have had to try and tolerate that for years from my step-son. Strikes me as ludicrous but hey - there's no telling the young folks when it comes to ''fashion'' LOL.

Things might change for him - as in little over a week he embarks on a career in the Navy and will be off to IL for basic. Methinks he will soon be having to shape up

What a stupid charge..."a child in need of supervision"...

What this CHILD needs, is a brick 'upside' HIS head...

I hope he's gone for a long time!

    Stay armed...stay safe!
