How to drive a Humvee in Iraq

Some of you might have seen this, but thought it was funny, although I'm sure the motive is serious trying to avoid getting trapped in traffic as a target for an attack. Some of them appear to have learned the lesson pretty well the first time around....

road rage in Iraq! There is no speed limits,no cops. very few traffic lights. Actually driving in Iraq could be fun if the pucker factor wasnt so high. Military vehicals do not want to stop or be stopped. I rode as a tail gunner,so every thing to me was backwards.every overpass got a M-60 pointed at it. If anyone tried to pass my convoy, they got to look straight down a barrel. One can imagin the line of cars that build up behind a convoy, which is rolling as fast as the slowest vehical can go. My gun mount was a russian truck hub, with a seat and a gun mount welded to it. I could piviot back and forth just over 180 degrees. There were 500 rounds for the 60 just to my left, along with 4 HE grenades, and and several color smokes. On the right at shoulder level was a AT rocket. The side panels were two sheets of diamond plate with cement poured inbetween. Hanging in front of me were old flack jackets. This was 03-04 before anybody got the upgraded armored anything.

Heck, I often carried 800 rounds for the Pig myself (along with the tripod, spare barrel bag, et cetera), and that was in training!

In the desert, I had 1,000 rds available for each of my HMMWV mounted M2HBs, and about 250 rds HEDP for the Mk19s. I never had to use more than around 300 .50cal and 100 40mm, but that never stopped me from trying to cram more ammo in my trucks! An AT4 strapped over each gunner's hatch was also SOP.

One thing I found interesting is that most Afghan and Iraqi civilians were less than impressed by having a Ma Deuce pointed in their face. They were pretty confident that we wouldn't mow them down with a .50, I guess... For this reason, I got all my gunners pistols and/or shotguns. When civilians would get too close to the trucks (if we were stuck in traffic or at a checkpoint, for example), they'd have a 9mm or 12 gauge directed at them. They couldn't be sure we wouldn't shoot them with a "small" weapon like that. :)
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

They were just late for lunch!

I have to say it bet almost anyone who has driven an emergency vehicle in a big city has driven like that, except for the bumping. (Downtown DC was always an adventure!)

A favorite saying of mine is, you paid so much for the car you could not afford turn signals.

To cut cost humvees' don't have a horn. The next best way to tell the guy in front of you to get the bleep out to the way, use your bumper.

HMMWVs have horns...they're just anemic, and sound even wimpier coming from something that big.

Reminds me of Mexico and the Dominican. Driving laws are more of a suggestion.
