Buying Land through US Bureau of Land Mangement

Yeah, this may be considered a "non RKBA" post, but it isn't. The plan is to buy land for hunting and an outdoor range.

So, anybody here have experience with purchasing land through the BLM?

There are three areas I'm interested in, Arizona/New Mexico, Colorado/Utah, Oregon/Idaho/Montana.

Checking the BLM websites for the various states indicates they may or may not have land available (conflicting info).

Some of the info I find indicates the land is only available via auction, some is a direct sale (conflicting info).

Some state I must appear for the sale, some allow purchase via US mail for documents (conflicting info).

Some info states I need to improve the land (water well, irrigation, etc.) and other info indicates the land is to be used as I see fit (conflicting info).
