WW2 Japanese invasion of Continental US, question

Can anyone provide proof that the Japanese decided against a mainland invasion of the US based on fears of civilian arms ownership?

I've heard it rumored, but can't find any facts.

perhaps try looking up quotes of Janase generals of WW2. My understanding was a general stated something to that effect.

Or maybe they simply weren't stupid enough to try and tackle a spread out land mass the size of the US with military installations all over it. Lets face it, any army would have to be spread pretty damn thing to even touch the surface of this country.

Also, back then you did not have The Jane Fonda & Cindy Sheehan CNN Show.

I spent a good bit of time trying to find this one to no avail. The best answer I ever found was here:

    http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/ayoob0109.html

Bob had told us that he’d been aboard the USS Constellation—he remembered the year as 1960—when he had been part of joint maneuvers conducted with what were by then called the Japanese Defense Forces. Over dinner and drinks, with Japanese and American naval officers talking shop, many of the WWII veterans, the question had come up, why didn’t the Japanese invade what they must have recognized as the wide open West Coast of the United States at the beginning of that war?

The officer had replied that his country was well aware that there was a high density of armed citizenry in America, even state championships for private citizens in the use of military rifles, and that the Japanese were not fools to set foot in such quicksand. Menard, even then a man committed to Second Amendment rights, naturally kept a vivid memory of the conversation.

"Sure, As long as the machines are workin' and you can call 911. But you take those things away, you throw people in the dark, and you scare the crap out of them; no more rules...You'll see how primitive they can get."

Japan did get onto the Aleutian Islands.

Even West Coast Canada was set up for defense & Vancouver Island BC had gun emplacements over Esquimalt harbor, the Japanese did shoot up a lighthouse on the coast...

Besides the firearms issue, they couldn't have pulled off an amphibious invasion that far from home for too long. They didn't have anywhere near the industrial capability longterm.

I remember hearing a quote from a japanese general or admiral that was something to the effect of "if we were to invade the mainland there would be a rifle barrel behind every blade of grass", wish I could give you more. Though there are some sights with all the big pro 2A quotes, like "freedom quotes" or something to that effect.

    I found the original article:

Plus I read on Wiki that the Japanese DID have a plan for invasion, although it was limited.

The Late Col. Cooper gave the same quotation packinnova did, several times in his 'Gunsite Gossip' writings. I cannot find any of the instances (I should have bookmarked them when I had them) but he was quite adamant that the source was valid. He sighted (if I recall correctly) a memoir from one of the admirals who was there.

    Edited to add:
Here is the first time Cooper brings up the story:

Japan had a better plan with the fire bomb balloons they let sail over the Pacific Ocean... keep people busy by lighting forest fires on the West Coast instead of focusing on wartime production.
