NC SWAT robbed in Memphis.
Memphis police were looking Monday night for the thieves who stole seven weapons from a North Carolina SWAT team van parked in South Memphis.
Members of the SWAT team based in Raleigh, N.C., were eating at Interstate Bar-B-Que, 2265 S. Third, about 3:30 p.m. Monday when they realized their van had been broken into, said Lt. Jerry Gwyn of Memphis felony response.
Taken were three machine guns, two semi-automatic handguns, and two 12-gauge shot guns, Gwyn said.
The officers, who were traveling from Raleigh to Little Rock for training, noticed two thieves driving away in a burgundy Ford Expedition, Gwyn said. A video surveillance camera also caught the thieves in action.
"We’re concerned with getting these guns off the street," Gwyn said. "We have a lot of folks working on it right now."
The theft was reminiscent of a heist in 1997, when thieves stole a Little Rock FBI team’s Suburban. Inside the SUV were grenade launchers, M-16 rifles, submachine guns and other potent weapons, which were found after an intense three-day search.

Hadn't heard about this one yet. Going to have to harass a couple of my cop buddies.

Let's hope the weapons are recovered unused and that the thieves get a very long sentence. (If they are caught, I suspect they might.)

Do SWAT teams call 911 when someone steals their guns?

Since I live here and work at a local TV news station I'll give you a little update.
One of the guns has been recovered in an apartment in North Memphis. They are not saying if it is a handgun or long gun.

"How could this happen??? We locked the doors!!!"
Does common sense not dictate that when you are transporting FA firearms, that someone be in the vehicle at all times??? In a perfect world it would be of no consequence, but the world ain't perfect, and they just opened their department up to a huge potential lawsuit.
Guns are guns, but, dang... a little extra care is in order, I would think.

If the gun banners get there way, this will happen a lot more, IMHO.
I wouldn't want to be a cop in post ban society, excuse me Mr. officer, while he gets capped from behind. Now one gun is two, and so on, and so on. But then I have been known to be a pessimist.

Complacency. It can happen to anyone so we all must be on guard against it 24/7.
It was a bonehead move but I feel sorry for the officers involved.
One screw up can ruin an otherwise exemplary career. Hope they get the opportunity to learn from their mistakes.
