    Japanese fooled in poodle scam
    26th April 2007, 18:49 WST

Thousands of Japanese have been swindled in a scam in which they were sold Australian and British sheep and told they were poodles.
Flocks of sheep were imported to Japan and then sold by a company called Poodles as Pets, marketed as fashionable accessories, available at $1,600 each.

That is a snip compared to a real poodle which retails for twice that much in Japan.

The scam was uncovered when Japanese moviestar Maiko Kawamaki went on a talk-show and wondered why her new pet would not bark or eat dog food.

She was crestfallen when told it was a sheep.

Then hundreds of other women got in touch with police to say they feared their new "poodle" was also a sheep.

One couple said they became suspicious when they took their "dog" to have its claws trimmed and were told it had hooves.

Japanese police believe there could be 2,000 people affected by the scam, which operated in Sapporo and capitalised on the fact that sheep are rare in Japan, so many do not know what they look like.

"We launched an investigation after we were made aware that a company were selling sheep as poodles," Japanese police said, the The Sun reported.

"Sadly we think there is more than one company operating in this way.

"The sheep are believed to have been imported from overseas - Britain, Australia."

Many of the sheep have now been donated to zoos and farms.

Oh my - does ''gullible'' come into play? Amazing

    Hmmm possibly 2,000 people at $1,600 .......... that's a cool $3.2 mil

That is the most amazing thing I have read in a long while.

Have they never seen a picture of a poddle or a sheep?

Do they not even know what dog looks like?

But the big question I have is can sheep be house broken?

Obviously the Japanese do not have an encyclopedia or the internet because if they did it would take all of 15 seconds to find what a poodle looks like and know that a sheep ain't it. Actually suckers must be born a little closer together than every minute.

Difference is pretty obvious to me.

This just goes to show that there is a lot of gullible people in the world. How could any one mistake a sheep for a poodle? you get what you pay for.

Looks like the same animal to me; just from different angles.

Hey. . . give 'em a break, they both have four legs and are kinda fuzzy.

Just thought of something: I don't think I would like to have them fix me dinner.

One of the things you probably want to look at is the teeth. Just about the most ignorant or stupid person I know can tell a carnivore from a herbivore by looking at the teeth and they would know that a dog is a carnivore. So if you look at the teeth and they are flat and obviously not for killing and ripping meat - what is your conclusion? The animal in question is not a carnivore. Of course the people who bought the sheep couldn't tell the difference between feet with claws and hooves.
