In 1957, I was 6 years old and it really was a great time to grow up. It's a shame that kids today can't grow up in the same environment. The only real scary thing that was going on back there that I vividly remember are the air raid sirens and "duck and cover drills". But, to a kid that was also exciting. Everyone sat outside on the porch at night or took walks and frequently left our doors unlocked without worry.

Well Bumper, we didn't have to "Duck and Cover" or practice burying out faces in the curb in case of nuclear blasts, but we did have Fire drills, Tornado drills (once it wasn't a drill), and towards the time of high school "lock down drills".
In the suburbs/more rural areas you can still sometimes find more of a good family community, where neighbors act like neighbors although that does seem to disappear some.

Amen. Its a true shame (and scary too!) that children and even adults lack these qualities today.
