Well, at least we didn't have to read his lips, eh?

Former Presidents and other politicians will always be somewhat polarizing. Though we may not agree with their politics or like them as individuals, I think it does behoove us to have a certain respect for the office they held, and the occasion where they're speaking. For example, I certainly didn't agree with William Howard Taft on a lot of issues, and I didn't like Warren G. Harding at all, but I didn't cause a stir when they spoke at my graduation(s).

I respect the office Clinton left. I don't respect any stain he left. The office deserved better. At least it deserved a modicum of reverence and respect from the occupier. But that's me. YMMV.

I know what you mean, and that's often been the case. Take Nixon, for example. I cheered when he resigned. I can't stand the bunch that's in there now, and will be thrilled when they're gone. But our whole political system is an adversarial process. Unfortunately, it's not really geared to select the best possible leader, but rather the one who can raise the most funds, gather the shrewdest advisers, and mobilize just enough of their supporters to grab a plurality of the vote. Would a system which selected the best possible leader ever have picked Calvin Coolidge? Good gosh, when he spoke at our graduation, the speech lasted a minute and half. What a lightweight.

The grand thing about our system of government is that it continues, even when we have leaders who are less than the office deserves. And this is a good thing, because it happens so often.
    Cheers,
    Rod

You only graduate from college once. If you don't go because you don't like what Clinton represents, then you are letting him get to you twice. Don't let him do that. Go to your graduation.
