    Question Whats This Thing Do?

It seems since we first went into Afghanistan (probably earlier) almost all US military vehicles, both armored and non have this vent thingy on it.
This "vent" seems to be put on many different places on a vehicle. I have seen it on doors, hoods, tank and APC turrets also.

Now, Im sure its NOT a vent. But that's what it looks like.

So can someone please tell me what it is does, before I die from curiosity?

On the rear/Middle side of the Bradley IFV:

    M113 APC:
(Between the 10 and "IFOR" on the side)

Heres one on the drivers door of a HUMVEE:

Primary Carry Gun: Sig Sauer 229~R (.40cal w/ Golden Saber JHP's)

I think it is supposed to direct a bomb blast away from the vehicle

Well, why would it be so small then? I mean on an APC, its only a VERY small area compared to the rest of the vehicle.

And the way the bars are slanted in an upward position, it would make the blast go towards the personnel really, instead of the ground.

Actually, it's a thermal panel (Combat Identification Panel "Quick Fix")that aids in ID'ing the vehicle with thermal sights, a measure to reduce instances of fratricide.

Ahhh. Makes perfect sense. Thank you!
So, in a thermal sight, I guess it looks like lighter shades of grey stripes?

I am a Bodyman for the AF and installing/modifying armor kits on M-series vehicles is what I do when I deploy. I have never seen this vent deal, but I can make an educated guess.

The military is constantly upgrading/changing armor to better protect against IED attacks that are always changing and lethal. Most armor kits are simply strategically placed steel plates that are added to the existing body to enhance protection. The trend has been thicker and thicker steel, which in time reaks havoc on other vehice systems (suspension, engine, tranny, etc.) and naturally has its limits.

My best guess is that this "vent" style armor is some sort of technological advancement over flat plate steel when it comes to deflecting shrapnel. I know for sure that its purpose is to protect the occupants, you can tell by its placement over the driver compartments. This is the person that gets killed the most in theses IED attacks, therefore you invest there first and when more $$$ falls from above you cover the rest of the passenger compartment.

Fiscal prioritization, or something like that. Hope it helps.

That's what I thought at first too.
But if you look again at the IFV, its not on the part where the driver is. Its in the rear where the troop carrying area is:
