Police helicoper and a shooting a couple blocks away.

Well I have been sitting here holding my sick son and watching a police helicopter do pass after pass over our subdivision. Search light out and looking for something. The light has passed up my street more than once.

Well I got my little man back to bed and went to the safe to get the M&P. My wife asked what was up and I told her what was going on. She knows that I already have my .38 snub on my hip and she gave me a look like "why are you in the safe?". I think she thinks that I worry too much. I see it as I would rather be prepared and have the 17rnd M&P if someone happens to come knocking on my door.

I then headed out to check on the dogs. They were barking which is not out of the ordinary. Needless to say, my yellow flag went up when I saw the helicopter. The barking dogs just added fuel to the fire.

When I got out back on the deck my neighbor was already out there, both of us with our maglights. He said "did you hear the news?" and then proceeded to tell me about how there was a shooting a couple of blocks away and the PD was still looking for the BG. We chatted a bit and that was that.

I sit here now writing this with a 642 on my hip and a M&P beside me on the table. I in no way see this as overkill. My wife may think differently, but she IS sleeping safe and sound.

The rest of the family is asleep now and I'm the guard dog.

No reason to assume all is well - until you know it. Sounds like things are not wrapped up as you posted, so - good scheme to stay on guard.

Hope things do resolve - so you can sleep!!

Nope, no outdoor sports for me. I do sometimes get out to get some exercise this time of night. I don't require a lot of sleep and like to use the extra time productively. Like spending time here on DC.

I will not be walking tonight. I will instead sit here reading, posting and watching JAWS for the umteenth time.

On three occasions at LEAST my husband has come in the apartment from being outside and having a smoke and said, "Get your gun on."

He's seen or heard something that alerted him and wants me to prepare.

I don't ask questions. I holster up. I agree with you. No over-reaction there.

Please, let us know what happened.

The Ghetto Bird circles my house very often, its never very comforting. One time when I lived high up in a dorm I swear when the flew past I was on the same level as the pilots.

    Anyhow, are there any updates?

Got an update. It turns out that a drunk ran his truck off the road into some trees and hit his head on the mirror cutting it open. He then ran from the vehicle as to avoid the approaching LE's. When caught he told them that he was shot instead of admitting to driving drunk.

What a schmoe. This guy must have been completely peppered. The story that reached me at the time was completely different than the real deal. I guess it's like that game they have the kids play in school. The kids sit in a circle and pass a story from kid to kid until it reaches the end. Then it is shown how different the two stories are.

I have no regrets with my actions. For all I knew the threat was real.

I am however always on guard duty here at the home front.

Never under estimate any threat - the perception is the precursor to action - if required. Seems the guy was a total maroon and cost the department a bunch of $$$'s too.

Me too and many others I'll be bound.

Sounds like good preps. Personally , I would have got out a long gun to be prepared.
