Thumbs up My 3" Mortar (Video)

I like "Big Toys" so yesterday I understood the local firework guy needed help.
I bought a bunch of 3" and 4" mortars to help out with the show.

Keep in mind we both have Licenses to purchase, own and operate commercial grade fireworks.

This was a test run. We test all of our stuff the day before. The neighborhood likes it and everyone has a good time.
This was shot a couple of hours ago.
In the first vid, cameraman didn't film the exploding display in the air, but Im sure you will here it.

Nice - ''Kinetic Ric" LOL - I do declare you are a pyromaniac (me too!) ........ and always have a soft spot for any of the mortars. The ''thump'' of the lift charge is good but the bursting charge even more satisfying.

I saw a display years ago at Dartmouth, Devon, UK where I believe they threw up a final starshell - 12" diameter!!!! The burst all but covered the visible sky - and it burst I believe at 1500 feet.

I also like the ''maroons'' as they were called in UK - no colors just a humungous bang and very bright light .......... I think they were about baseball size, thick plastic outer casing and a charge of maybe flash powder or similar ... could be heard for miles - which was of course in sea-going terms what they were made for.

We have them here at my local town display tomorrow but not sure what they are called.

Did you cut the fuse on that thing, or are that truely that fast?

I can see me blowing my hand off...

Great view when you had it in the dark. I appreciate it, in fact my pyro in me in starting to come out... I am wondering how much play money has been set aside....

Yeah, the guy Im doing this with has 8" ones. Thats the biggest in this years arsenal. But since we live in a residential area, we didn't want to break any windows!

We did go out to my cousins farm and test some of those out earlier, but i didn't think to bring my camera.

They are indeed that fast. They have a black powder coating on the fuse. In the show, we will use electric blasting caps to ignite them. The same blasting caps that are used for C-4 plastic explosives.

That way we can be far enough away ( about 15 feet away).
Of course, we will light some off by hand like in these two videos, becuase its just so much more fun.

I do remember one case documented .. where a guy ignited a fuse but with his head right over the tube - it went prematurely and by all accounts took his head off! That lifting charge on the biggies is ''generous''!

Yeah, by federal law we have to give the GPS coordinates of the location to the FAA where our show will be held.

The 3" and larger "works" will go as high as 1,000 to 2,000 feet in altitude depending on conditions and brand.

We call them Salutes. They give off a massive concussion, and a magnesium white flash. They are, and always have been, the reason that I go to fireworks displays.

Heres one from today also. These are very small in size, but even louder than the mortars we have!

Ahh yes - of course, ''salute'', I shoulda remembered.

The link was bringing up a private page ... couldn't find any ''friend request'' to view other than an ad.

Anyways - I know them well and concussion is certainly the operative word - great

    Exclamation BTDT

Been doing that with a federal class B explosives license for close to 30 years, I've had to take a time out though for the last couple though bought a 20 acre farm AKA 350 yard shooting range.
    A Few rules to remember.
    1. Most imported Class B stuff is in little plastic bags, open them immediately and place in a sealed container with a good quantity of Silica Gel to remove all moisture, these things are major glitchy when wet.
    2. Add about 5" of cannon fuse via a bit of masking tape the the primary fuse, that is unless you are using electrical ignition, this will add precious seconds to get out of dodge time.
    3. 4" titanium salutes are cool and real loud but take care to distance your self from any buildings the concussion will shatter windows.
    4. Get some steel tubes and bury them before you have a barrel burst and hurt someone.

Have a safe 4th and enjoy
