    Road trip ideas!

    Here's the deal:
Got a week off coming up in August.
The wife, 2 1/2 yr old son and myself are going somewhere.
    I live in South Florida.
We like spontaneity, the unexpected, and don't need luxury.
To give you an idea, we did a 3 week honeymoon up the east coast to Maine without a set route or any reservations.
    Soooo, got any ideas?
    A fishing lodge on Okachobee?
    Something in Georgia?
    Gulf coast?
    I'm open.
(We are on a budget too.)
Please keep my boy in mind also.
    Thanks!

I saw south Florida in your post and started thinking of all the neat stuff in that area to do and see... but then it dawned on me that you live there so probably have done and seen it.

A week in a car with a toddler doesnt sound like much fun to me and I'm sure it doesnt sound like much fun to him, so I'm trying to think of something that is somewhat close, and what I look for in a vacation is a change of landscape.

So, how about you head north to Sc or Tn rent a cabin in the mountains? Its not very expensive, you can drive there in a day or so, its kid friendly, lots to do, and its a completly different landscape than Fl.

That sounds like a great idea!
Do you know anyplace in particular?
I'll start poking around the Web too and see what I can come up with.
    Thanks!

I've thought of doing the same thing, into the NC mountains. Here's a property management group that covers a whole collection of homes in the hills: Carolina Mountain Vacations.

Remember Lake Ockechoobe is low as heck and fishing might be bad with all the heat. If it gets back to a good level, I reccomend Angler' Paradise as a place to stay,. Very inexpensive rooms with kitchenette and you can rent a boat or a pontoon. Nicely stocked fishing store for any last minute needs. And there is a Wally World about 5 miles west. But.... there is nothing else there for the wife and kid.... just fishing and Illegal mexicans working the sugar cane fields.

St. Agustine... tourist town which I am not too crazy about but loved the Fort. That alone was worth the visit. It was chilling to see cannons and mortars forged not far from where my ancestors lived in Spain. Oh! And in doentown there was this small theater where they actually served food, beer and spirits which you could consume while watching the film. Great fries!

You have to make the shot when fire is smoking, people are screaming, dogs are barking, kids are crying and sirens are coming.

The big tourist area is Gatlinburg, but it is pretty heavily visited and can be to crowded at times. The nice part about it is that there is all kinds of stuff to do there. I dont have a particular place to tell you to look into, but I've gone a few times and never have had a bad experiance with the rental companies.

    Thanks guys.
I found georgiamountainrentals.com and they look really nice.
    In the town of Helen.
Lots of nature and downtown artsy stuff to keep everybody interested.
    About a 12hr drive though.
That's a lot of time for the little guy.

If you want downtown artiness and mountain lodges and air you can actually breathe check out Asheville NC, in particular Saluda just south of town, we do it every halloween, great place.

But if I were you I would rent a Dodge Viper convertible and drive down to Grenada, Nicaragua... probably get there in about 48 hours. Then kick back, do a few real estate deals in that burning hot market, maybe hit Managua (just to show the locals a V10...) and then rip back, 140mph all the way home.

I have three words for you - Blue Ridge Parkway. Take your time, drive from southwest to northeast, and then you can take I95 back home, stopping along the way at Busch Gardens, Myrtle Beach, et. cetera.

A few years back, that would definitely have been an option!
Wife and a kid change things a bit.
I'm looking into all suggestions though.
I really do appreciate the ideas.
    Thanks again!

    Chooie!
That BR Pkwy looks like a great trip!
New York has suddenly entered the picture, but the BR Pkwy is definitely on the list.
    Pete,
Ashville looks interesting too. Gonna read more about it.
