    Florida Hog Hunting

I'm moving down to Florida from October to June, and I'd like to go hog hunting while I'm down there. I haven't hunted anything but birds and small game so far. Anyone have any advice to offer?

I'm planning on using my Ruger SBH Bisley Hunter in .44 Magnum, and/or my 5.5" Bisley in .45 LC. I'll be using some hefty handloads that are accurate and powerful.

I just moved from Florida. You will have good success on the southwest coast, between Sarasota (Sorrysota in local parlance) and Ft. Myers. A little inland from Sorrysota is a town called Arcadia. That triangle between the three cities is loaded with hogs (big pigs).

I've hunted a lot in the southern Ocala National Forest. Take Hwy. 19 north out of Eustis. Forest Road 595 to the west is good for deer and hog. To the north, up Hwy. 19 north of US 40 is a management area called Caravelle Ranch (permit might be needed). Three areas of water - Rodman Dam, Ocklawaha and St. Johns Rivers. Richloam is another area with lots of big hog, no permit required there. Go to http://myfwc.com/hunting/

Good luck and wear LOTS OF ORANGE. Florida hunters are not the brightest bulbs in the box!

I have personally hunted in the Hendry/Okeechobee County area and have shot 7 hogs, two over 300 pounds. It's fast paced with dogs, slower from a tree stand but all in all, a good time. I used .44 .45 Colt's for all but one piggy. That one fell to a .45-70.

I'll be up in the panhandle, about an hour east of Pensacola. Are there any good places up there or will I need to head further south? I picture myself stalking around, but maybe tree stands are the way to go. What do you think?

This is my neck of the woods, and the hog hunting is as advertised.
Look in the yellow pages or the Internet for guides in your area, this will increase you success rate by 90%.

Hog hunts are not expensive, and the fun meter is high.

    Actually, that's not true.

The Floridians are plenty bright. It is all the transplants.

Just like "Florida drivers." We are fine. It is the ones from up north...

    Thumbs up Hog hunting

I've hunted the Three Lakes area in Central Florida area and have taken quite a few hogs useing the Ruger 44 mag from a tree stand. Perry in North Florida was another good place but is hard to get around due to the heavy brush.

+1 to what he said. Most of the problems in FL are imported from the north.

I had a couple of buddies that just recently went Hog hunting and had a blast. If you are shooting on private land, you will not need any kind of permit and the prices are inexpensive plus you get to take home a fully cleaned (for a price) hog for Thanksgiving or Christmas. I never hunted before, but I might give hog hunting a try to get some pork for the Chritmas season. Do take your cooler (the big one).

In other News for South Floridians, Canadian Tourist Hunting Season opens November 1st. This year you are allowed to tag as many vehicles from Quebec as you want but the Canadian Goverment has requested only one vehicle from any other province.
(For our Canadian friends:It is a joke! OK a tad mean but a joke. You should see the drivers you guys send us, no wonder we are the number one city with road rage)

I'm not too worried about all the imported bad drivers in Florida - I'm in Southern California right now and its just awful.

LB - Thanks for the tip - I'll do my best.

It seems like the best hog hunting is going to be a few hundred miles south. I'll be near Pensacola, so I guess I'll have to wait for a long weekend to make the trip worthwhile.

Thanks for all the input (and jokes) - keep it coming.

Any .44 magnum loaded with Winchester Partition Gold Bullets will do the job! I have hunted alot in OK/TX and they fall everytime with those bullets! Also killed one with my 70 series Nickel Gold Cup 45acp....

I've got some heavy LBT style bullets I'll be loading up in my .45 LC and .44 Magnum - I might try out some of my 300 XTPs but I'm pretty stoked about the lead....I have confidence in their performance, and they're super accurate too. I'm getting around 1" groups from 25 yards off sandbags, and I'm not used to shooting off sandbags, and have to do it from an awkward position (no chairs at the indoor range)

I used a bow on this one a few years back. It ran about 20 yds and fell over.

    Shot placement is the key.

I also shot one last year with my .50 cal muzzle loader using 100 grains of pyrodex and a 295 gr powerbelt copper plated hollowpoint. It didn't run at all, it just fell over and squeeled a bit.
