Scientists breed world’s first mentally ill mouse

SCIENTISTS have created the world’s first schizophrenic mice in an attempt to gain a better understanding of the illness.

It is believed to be the first time an animal has been genetically engineered to have a mental illness. Until now they have been bred only for research into physical conditions such as heart disease. It will allow researchers to study the disease and develop treatments using a limitless supply of laboratory animals.

Animal rights campaigners have condemned the research, saying that it is morally repugnant to create an animal doomed to mental suffering.

The mice were created by modifying their DNA to mimic a mutant gene first found in a Scottish family with a high incidence of schizophrenia, which affects about one in every 100 people. The mice’s brains were found to have features similar to those of humans with schizophrenia, such as depression and hyperactivity.

“These mutant mice may provide an important new tool for further study of the combinations of factors that underlie mental illnesses like schizophrenia and mood disorders,” said Takatoshi Hikida, of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, a leading researcher.

The egg cells of mice were genetically modified by inserting a gene associated with schizophrenia into their DNA. The eggs were fertilised and grown into viable baby mice using surrogate mothers.

I know that much can be learned from animal research to benefit humanity, and I almost never agree with animal "rights" nuts; but I am in agreement, here. I think this is unnatural. And yes, I know you're going to say, "Of course it is; it was a man-made experiment." But what I mean is, it's an abomination to do such a thing.

I say leave the little mice alone and do the experiment on rats.

Rats were responsible for the Bubonic Plague that wiped out 2/3 of the human population of Europe so we owe them a big one in the way of retribution and pay~back.

I think scientists like to play god, and try to learn ways to fix things. I don't think it will ever work. Sorry. People get old and die. Some people are crazy. I think there are limits to what modern science can do for us.

Well, we're never going to uninvent the firearm and go back to the bow or the stone ax...and Science is a mighty machine that is going to keep on plowing forward.

The research is not going to stop or even slow down and some of the result of that will be downright amazing and dumbfounding and some of it will not be so great. That's for sure.

Oh...and technically it WAS the fleas and not the rats - the rats were the buses (the public transportation) of the fleas - the fleas caused the plague to spread but, who cares if a flea is totally bonkers or not? My dog maybe.
