DIY "death ray" laser for under $50!

Warning, to those who decide to actually build one of these, IT IS NOT A TOY, and WILL permanently blind you or anyone else if you aim it at the eyes, for even a fraction of a second. That said..

All you need is a laser module for $8, a mini mag lite for ~$10, and a DVD burner from which to scavenge the diode. Then it just requires a bit of engineering, and you've got a laser powerful enough to pop balloons, light matches, etc.. from afar.

Its worth more geek points to build your own laser.

Isn't there a 5mW limit on lasers available to general public?

    Sure sounds interesting tho!

5mW limit is for those lasers marketted as laser pointers or other devices where the laser is "exposed" to the end user.

DVD burners get away with a much higher output laser as it is in a sealed assembly, where exposure to the end user is nonexistent.

...at work I sometimes use a laser welder -- a single blast measured in milliseconds will instantly fuse two pieces of metal. The maximum voltage is 400V so power is in watts or kilowatts. Its obviously very painful to shoot yourself with this type of laser...

I don't think the 5mW Limit Information is correct.

    Check out WickedLasers.
You can buy hand-held 75mW & up. Whatever your wallet can afford.

    Interesting Survival Application

That the slightly higher power handheld lasers can be used to heal/stop the bleeding of open cuts and wounds.
