This site not allowed
My internet connection went down last week. I went to the library while I was in town to check e-mail and feed my DC.com addiction.
To my surprise this and most every forum like it was banned by the administrator "due to potential violent content".
I was disappointed to say the least.

Disappointed I can believe but surprised?
Maybe not so much - I expect this is quite a common move by the IT dept - to make sure people do not unwittingly get ''traumatized'' - by all the ''violent'' content
Sad ain't it - just a further sign of all the PC crap we have these days - the ''nanny syndrome''.

I would complain about this. The library is a public facility and the administrator should not be able to make a decision like this on their own. Doesn't surprise me that they did, but you should be able to access information like this without it being blocked.
If you need/want to then take it to their boss and see if you can get his

Come on guys.
Don't you know that if you bury your head in the sand and don't even think about self defense, violent attacks, guns, fists, and harsh remarks, you will be safe?
School and library officials know this; why can't we figure it out.

Wait just a damn moment.
The American Library Association rigorously opposes filters on internet porn in libraries (source) but this sort of filtering is acceptable?
I'd raise some heck.

I would demand to speak to the library director and have that person explain to me why this site is filtered.
There is more violent content on news sites than here.

It just ain't right. Next thing you know they'll ban porn, too. Afraid young folks will see it and then their children might be born naked or something.
Complain to the head of the library. If that doesn't work, take it to the city council.
Cheers,
Rod

The Brady Bunch page would be a good one to try to pull (hey good idea
) before you go and complain. If you can get to that site and not DC then you should have a good argument.

Ask to have the filter removed since you are an adult. It's a public library, therefore they should not be able to filter your access.
Our city recently with through this after someone complained that the library was unblocking pornographic material for adults who proved they were 18+ with valid ID.
http://www.rnews.com/story_2004.cfm?...pe=18&id=47221
The Supreme Court ruled anyone over age 17 can legally view adult Websites at library computers. They must show ID to have a filter removed from the computer.

The only gun site you find at the library is called..."The BARE Essentials of Self-Defense"...
"That I cannot do."
