Police: Robber Shot, Killed With Own Gun

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/wtae/20070903/lo_wtae/14035100

Police said a suspected robber was shot and killed with his own gun in the city's West End.

Police identified the man as Charles Long, 32, of McKees Rocks.

Investigators said Long kicked open the door of a house along Parson Street in Esplen just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Terrence Triplett, 27, was inside and managed to wrestle Long's gun away and shot him twice, police said.

Officials said when they arrived, they found Long lying just inside the doorway.

No charges have been filed against Triplett at this time.

Good story and good on the GG for having some guts. However, I think this should go in the "success stories".

I love the way they always add that "no charges have been filed against Triplett at this time". And why should there be any charges against him? He did the community a service. I'd like to see instead, "Mr. Triplett will be awarded a certificate for meritorious service to the community".

I especially like the method in which Mr. Triplett explained to Mr. Long that he was not welcomed into his home...

Again, give this man a key to the city. The people that live there are safer because of him.

In NY state the case would go to grand jury by default. The prosecutor would argue that once he disarmed the criminal, the homeowner was no longer in grave danger and was not justified in using deadly force.

No idea if VA is the same or if they have some sort of castle doctrine.

It doesn't really matter what state you are in....

Every news article of this type seems to include that disclaimer either made by LE or the reporter. By the way, no offense, but thank God we don't all live in NY with their restrictive laws. This type of response to an attack should be celebrated not discouraged. The lawyers in this country have made bravery and defense of self, property, and others a bad thing somehow. That is a sad commentary on our society.
