A man told police that he shot his hand by accident while opening a gate at 104 NW 136th Place. He was rushed to the hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units from Station no. 58. Police are investigating.Talk about your household accidents -- this one's a doozy.

A West Miami-Dade man shot himself in the hand with a pistol Thursday while opening a gate.

Miami-Dade police and fire rescue were summoned to 104 NW 136th Pl. after the shooting was reported.

It was not just any gate, but a large, heavy-metal, ornamental one that is part of a fence circumnavigating the yard.

The shooting was reported around 2:20 p.m. Fire-rescue personnel bandaged the hand, the victim's left. Then he walked over to a waiting gurney and was wheeled into a fire-rescue unit.

It was classified as an accidental shooting.
You have to make the shot when fire is smoking, people are screaming, dogs are barking, kids are crying and sirens are coming.

You think he might have been trying to shoot the gate open?

Man I hate those sticky locks and hinges, personally I use WD40, not a .40

So why the was his gun out of the holster to open the gate at 2pm in the afternoon? (not stating that it would be ok after sundown, but you get my point)

Perhaps he thought it was easier to open with a few shots then actually using the keys....

I took my Kimber out to my back gate...I don't get it...there was not a way to shoot myself trying to opening the gate.
This sound like an excuse for some other 'stupid' trick performed somewhere near the gate...
    Something IS fishy!

    Gate resisting?

May be the gate was being hard to get along with and he pulled some "heat" to convince it otherwise.

During a struggle with the gate, there was a ND and thus, the injury

Sure stretches the imagination - to see this happening as suggested.

Strong fish smell here, that might be covering up some more likely explanation!

No holster I know of magically coughs up its firearm when one attempts to open or close a gate. One has to wonder at the intelligence of those at the scene who would regard such a thing as "accidental." Sounds much more like gross negligence or reckless behavior with serious risk to everyone within a radius of 300yds. But then, what do I know.
