    NORFOLK

A WVEC reporter and an off-duty Virginia Beach police officer were robbed at gunpoint early Wednesday.

Reporter Patrick Terpstra and the officer, whose identity was not released, were approached in the 800 block of Shirley Ave. about 1 a.m. by two men. They were ordered to the ground at gunpoint, according to a police report.

In addition to cash and phones, the robbers took a handgun the officer carried, WVEC reported. It was the officer’s own weapon, said Officer Chris Amos, a Norfolk police spokesman.

Gunmen rob off-duty police officer in Norfolk

06:05 PM EDT on Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Reported by: Wayne Carter WITH VIDEO

Norfolk Police are investigating the armed robbery of an off-duty Virginia Beach police officer early Wednesday.

The officer and 13News Reporter Patrick Terpstra were walking on Shirley Avenue in Ghent when two men with a gun approached them.

The suspects demanded their wallets and forced them to the ground. They then stuck their hands in the victim's pockets and took money, a wallet, blackberry and then found a gun the officer was carrying.

The men fled with the items.

13News’ Kathryn Hart was driving down Shirley Avenue when she saw the two men on the corner frantically waving.

"It upset me to see him like that,” said Hart of Terpstra. “He's usually calm and collected and to see him shaken like that was disturbing."

Minutes after the attack, Hart pulled out her cell phone and called police, who searched the area with dogs and found nothing.

“Police officers are not super-beings,” said 13News police analyst Mike Carey. “They can become victims of crimes as well”

Carey says people should not be surprised that the armed officer didn't stop the robbery. He says the men were at a clear disadvantage.

"It would not take much for the gun to be used,” said Carey.

The victims say the suspects were dressed in black from head to toe, and each wore a costume with a skeleton on it.

"This is kind of the first with these outfits,” said Chris Amos of the Norfolk Police Department. “It's our experience most folks who rob someone don't always see the light and stop. Generally, there is a progression, a continuation until they are caught."

    The two victims weren't hurt.

Only the police should have guns--they're the ones with all the training

True--but what are they doing out at 0100? Shouldn't people avoid places like that? So why does Norfolk PD believe we should be disarmed?? Anyone else in Condition White while downtown at 0100?

Condition White got them robbed by skeletons and they're lucky they are not in the decaying process of turning into skeletons themselves right now.
Glad they made it through the event alive - they could have easily been slaughtered like little condition white lambs.

So....what about the rest of us??
You're at even more of a disadvantage....provided you have not recieved enough training and have a brass set big enough to confront armed men who out number you 2x and have got the drop on you.

Of course if his mind wasnt on something else, he may have seen 'em coming and avoided the whole thing in the first place.

Ditto SIXTO that it's super tough to come out on top of any scenario where the BGs have the drop on the good guy/guys.
Cop or civilian it's extremely difficult or next to impossible to beat the drop and come through it alive and uninjured.

You have the 'right to remain silent', while I take your wallet, badge, and gun...

Would it have been better to make a move, get shot, or...do nothing and get shot anyway...luckily, this time they remaind alive!

Hard to call...hindsight is always 20-20, of course!

under condition white - they prolly did the right thing - glad the BGs were not intent upon more "deadly" crimes

    [flame suit on]
did see unequal/unfair treatment in the press though - unearned privilege in that officer's name was not reported

equal is equal and no one should be "more" equal...

in the end - just glad none of the GGs injured

There are alot of bars and restaurants in the Ghent section. Perhaps they were walking home from a night on the town? Thing about Ghent is there's the "bar" area, then you cross a street and you're in the GHETTO!

Bad section of town there, I know Pat he comes into the Norfolk circuit court quite a bit, nice guy.

I'm with the others I have spoken to about it, bad enough to need a "bodyguard" its bad enough to stay out of. Seems they where doing a story on an asron maybe.

Kind of hard to fault them though, when a shotgun gets stuffed in your face.
