PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Two armored car guards were shot and killed by a robber as they removed deposits from a bank ATM in a brazen daylight heist Thursday, setting off a sweeping search for the killer that shut down a nearby mall and several schools.

After hours of searching, authorities had few leads and only a sketchy description of the gunman, who police said approached the guards and fired without saying a word.

"He just came out initially and just assassinated them, that fast," Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said.

HE DID DIRTY WORK IN A DIRTY WAY. SUCKS, BUT EFFECTIVE.

The robber approached the car from behind shortly after 8 a.m., shot one guard in the chest, then went around the vehicle and shot the second guard as he tried to unholster his gun, police said.

...tried to unholster his gun... SIT FOR A MINUTE AND LET THAT SINK IN.

Johnson said neither the victims nor a third guard who was injured fired a shot. CURIOUS.

"There was no physical contact at all. There was just firing, it was an assassination," Johnson said.

The gunman fired at the cab of the Loomis armored car before fleeing in a black Acura TL sedan, police said.

Johnson said surveillance tape from the NO GUNS Wachovia bank's security camera and another northeast Philadelphia business showed the robber getting out of his car and putting on gloves before killing William Widmaier, 65, and Joseph Alullo, 50.

Widmaier, a Philadelphia police officer from 1966 to 1989 33 YEARS SERVICE, and Alullo, who served on the police force from 1973 to 2000 27 YEARS SERVICE, were assigned to the same district, where they became friends, Johnson said.

TWO RETIRED COPS TRYING TO SUPPLEMENT THEIR RETIREMENT. COMPLACENT? INCOMPETENT?

Widmaier was shot once in the chest, and Alullo was shot three times in the chest and abdomen, police said.

The third guard was grazed by shattered glass as the robber tried to shoot through the armored car, Loomis spokesman Mark Clark said. That guard was treated at a hospital for lacerations and released, a spokeswoman said. Authorities said he was 69 but did not release his name.

69! 69!! SURE HE WAS CHEAP LABOR, BUT DANG! DO WE REALLY WANT 69 YEAR OLD MEN WORKING ARMORED CARS. AFTER ALL, THEY ARE ARMORED FOR A REASON!

All three Loomis guards were armed YET..., Clark said. The injured guard radioed for help after his co-workers were shot, the company said.

Widmaier was married with adult children and Alullo was married with three daughters, Loomis said in a news release. The men worked out of the company's branch in Pennsauken, N.J.

"These were experienced, dependable guys who have dedicated a great part of their lives to serving their community," said Cal Murri, president of Loomis U.S. "It is a terrible loss for us all."

A short time after the shootings, police recovered an empty duffel bag behind the Turf Club, an off-track betting parlor directly behind the bank, Johnson said. Police believe that the bag came from the armored car. Johnson said he did not know how much money the shooter got away with.

The mall where the bank is located was temporarily shut down, and police were stopping motorists leaving the area as they searched for the gunman. Several schools in the area were locked down.

Police initially said they were looking for four suspects, but Johnson said it appeared there was only one robber. Police had no explanation for the discrepancy.

Johnson said police and FBI investigators were reviewing surveillance video from the bank, which is at a busy intersection of shops and other businesses.

Police showed cropped still frames from the bank surveillance tape that show a man wearing a yellow baseball cap pointing a handgun toward the front of the ATM. FBI spokeswoman Jerri Williams said the full view of the scene was being withheld out of respect for the victims' families.

Johnson blamed the loss of life on the availability of handguns in Philadelphia and around the country. BECAUSE OTHER WISE THE SHOOTER WOULD HAVE BEEN AT HIS GRANDMOTHER'S HOUSE FINISHING UP THE CHRISTMAS CROCHET. OH THE HORROR IF HE HAD USED AN AMERICAN PATRIOT FREEDOM DEFENSE RIFLE, AKA AK-47 EBR.

Speaking of an international police chief's conference he recently attended, he said: "Every other country has the same problems we have. The one problem they didn't have is our gun problem ... A robbery with a knife or a baseball bat, somebody might have been injured. A robbery with a gun, somebody's killed." NON LETHAL KNIVES AND BASEBALL BATS THAT HOLD POWER OVER GUNS. NOW WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?

(This version CORRECTS officer's name to Alullo sted Allullo)

Last time I checked they were still hunting for the perp - haven't caught up in a while.

Johnson blamed the loss of life on the availability of handguns in Philadelphia and around the country.
This needless to say chaps my hide as it will most here - it is such a ludicrous statement. Maybe amend that to "availability of handguns to criminals" - which is not in any way the same as availablity to lawful folks.

It as ever suggests the solution is yeah - ''ban guns'' - I am so sick of this insinuation - knowing as we all do - punitive measures against the good guys does squat - zilch - to affect the bad guys

That is what I'd call ''Bloomberg-speak".

That's the nature of the biz and why I'd never do it. Sure, you're armed...but you're at the mercy of some bonehead who has the luxury of making the first move.

Mayor Johnson is an anti-gun, sniveling little fool. Yet another moronic politician who thinks that if we just didn't have guns everything would be better and everyone would be nicer and obey the law.

Maybe he should vacation in England and see how well it's worked there.

Correction. Johnson is the Chief of Police, who works for the anti-gun, sniveling little fool AKA Mayor John Street.

I have no doubt that Philly has gone bad, just like every other city that has put the same kind of "leadership" in office.

Lets not get away from the real issue at hand here. This could have happened anywhere. Its ashame that two guys who should have been enjoying life lost theirs.
I do wonder how one guy could get the drop on three. I know the guards were a little older, I dont think that is as much of an issue as they might not have been paying attention.

And that is how to do that. It truly is that simple. Absolute ruthlessness combined with overwhelming and superior firepower committed quickly and decisively. In a liberal society, it almost impossible to guard against that, so long as the money is in the open and the "guards" are asleep or (practically speaking) unarmed.

My condolences to the dead, and their families. Risky business, guarding against evil.

Yes, a lot of them did stop doing that to avoid the "bad image"

A lot of the customers complained about the guns, some even wanted unarmed guards to pick up/ deliver in their stores. This is the price paid for that garbage.

Dumb, any way you slice it. That's silver platter treatment for criminals. It's malfeasance and appeasement. It has but one result, in the end.

For those who don't want armed escorts of their funds, let 'em do the run themselves if they'd prefer. The "light bulb" will turn on at some point.

I was especially surprised that it was referred to as an "assassination" - certainly not the case. Murder and armed robbery, yes. No one prominent was killed for political reasons, but the ignorant Police Commissioner called it an assassination to make it sound worse - it makes it seem more reasonable that he was helpless. (Of course he was helpless). I don't know why a Police Commissioner would want to create the impression that if everything was his way he could prevent crimes like this "assassination" from happening. Thats just setting yourself up for failure. Police shouldn't think that they can prevent crimes from happening - its just not possible.

the shotgun was because you were not required to be "certified" to use it (most states require the guards to certify with the type of weapon they are carrying on the job - revolver or pistol...

the guards in my part of the country (different company) have a program to purchase body armor through the company before going out on the street

    sad situation

    hope they catch that slug

    Suspect charged ...

CNN News story, as of 5:30am, 10-6-2007.

A man named Mustafa Ali has been questioned and charged with the double murder and robbery. No details, other than he's been charged, following questioning.

CNN) -- A man was arrested and charged in Thursday's deadly armored car robbery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, police said Saturday.

The robber, described as a black male wearing a yellow baseball cap, is seen on tape from a surveillance camera.

Mustafa Ali, 36, was charged with two counts of murder, robbery and other related offenses in the shooting deaths of two Loomis armored car guards and theft of cash at a bank ATM.

Ali was picked up on Friday and questioned overnight before he was charged.

Ali, who is not expected to get bail, was to have a preliminary arraignment within 24 hours. Police also seized his vehicle.

The victims were identified as retired police officers Joseph Allullo, 50, and William Widmaier, 65. Each had more than 20 years on the force. Allullo retired in 2003 and Widmaier retired in 1999.

A third guard was wounded in the robbery.

The gunman took an undetermined amount of money, police said. They were searching for a man who fled the scene in a black Acura TL with tinted windows and a sunroof.

The guards were attacked shortly after 8 a.m. as they were servicing an ATM outside a Wachovia Bank branch near Roosevelt Mall in northeast Philadelphia, police said. The gunman fired at two guards who were outside the armored car and at the third guard, who was inside. Video Watch video images of the gunman at the scene »

The third guard was hurt by flying glass when a bullet shattered one of the vehicle's windows, said Mark Clark, a spokesman for Loomis, the company that owns the armored car.

Police said they found an empty black duffel bag behind an off-track betting parlor near the scene of the crime that may have been taken from the armored car after the shootings.

Several elementary schools in the area were briefly locked down after the incident. The nearby Roosevelt Mall was also shut.

The bank branch is located near entrances to I-95 and I-76, either of which, police said, could have served as an escape route.

Police were reviewing security tapes from the bank's cameras.
