Did I mention you get to see some M1 Carbine action in the movie?

    Betty,

Forgive me as I do not own either an M1 carbine or an M14 in any variant and am thus incredibly ignorant. I can't even tell the difference unless I see them side by side with the magazines inserted.

What gives it away as an M1? I thought it was some kind of semiautomatic commercial M14 clone.

M1 carbine Euc is real small - and 30 cal, using a parallel wall cased round. Same round can used in suitable revo as well potentially.

Wish I had a pic - but maybe someone else has.

See that's my problem... I can't tell the two apart except up close. And I've seen so many things at gun shows labeled as M1s or M14s I'm not always sure what's what.

I always thought the M14 was supposed to be a big old sucker that was too light for its caliber and way too big and heavy to lug around Southeast Asia, which I understand is why it was discontinued, but the things I've seen in person that were supposed to be M14s didn't look that big.

At least I don't confuse the Garand with the carbine... I need some kind of reference material.

Okay this is supposed to be the M1...

And this here is supposed to be the M14...

The only way I know to tell is the relative size of the magazine. If I saw one in isolation I think I'd get it horribly wrong all the time...

    Ever feel really stupid?

Euc, it is as much as anything I think the fore-end that gives it away and perhaps too the rather ''stubby'' barrel length. Hard to explain and tho I don't own an M1 carbine - have used some and there is ''something'' about the proportions I guess that just seems to ID it. Hard to put it better!

And sure as heck dude - you ain't stupid!!!! Heck I am crap on firarms history and have numerous gaps in what I know - plus one of the best ways to find out is to ask - which is quite simply what you did!!
