It is actually not as easy as one might think to board a ship that is moving at anything faster than 12 knots. I know this from experience. I read a report not too long ago where a cruise liner's skipper actually out-manuevered and out-ran a group of pirates in small boats armed with AK's and RPG's. When you are in a small boat at the water line of a large moving ship, the freeboard looks mighty high and slicker than ice....and waves generated the ships wake can be down right dastardly and dangerous.

If all else failed, if I was the skipper, I would have the Bos'un pipe the ship's master-at-arms to break out the skeet guns and pass the word for all passengers who are familiar with firearms to report to the Pilot House for deputizing!

    Phalanx, anyone?

I know it is for aerial targets, but if it can hit them, surely it can hit a pirate boat.

The 25mm chain guns we had mounted on our cruiser for the 1991 Gulf War did a remarkable job of spontaneously gutting and cleaning the Iraqi Army troops on several Oil and Gas platforms we ran across in the Northern Gulf. I'm sure they would work just as well on Pirates.

Didn't the MK-19 start out as a naval gun? I think that would be the bee's knees in sinking pirate ships.

I answered my own question, yes it was a naval gun.

MK-19s were used in the riverine forces in 'nam. I recall seeing some mounted along with two .50 cals in PBR gun tubs.

It sounds like most of the ships caught are ones that are dumb enough to slow down. Those ships that turn about and crank up the speed when some yahoos in a small boat come racing at them get away clean.

Large cargo and cruise ships handle the open ocean much better than skiffs with outboard motors.

I like the idea about the trap guns on cruise ships. Too bad from the deck the light shot would be fairly inneffective. Better to break out the bottles of hard licquor some rags and a lighter! Toss those from the top of the deck at the dinky boat alongside. If they tie up you can always get the cooks to empty the oil from the deep friers over the side!

I remember when the Barrett semi auto .50s hit the scene there were mentioned in an article as a good choice for people on pleasure yachts in parts of the world where piracy is a problem.

Saw a pirate report on History Channel? Cargo ship crewmen are supposed to fight them off with fire lines! There is also a security group that provides protection. That ought to be fun. Most countries outlaw weapons in these situations so they don't carry arms. Sucks.
