I know people who know a great deal about domestic and world events, and they vote, and they're still idiots.

    I voted Nay.

First, voting is a right for citizens. You can, at any time, choose not to exercise a right.

Second, people who would otherwise not vote will just vote randomly. From a practical point of view, all candidates and their supporters are better off without these people's vote.

Both are too funny, too sad, and too true!

But can we really ban idiots from voting?

The problem is the idiots would probably get to decide who are the idiots. They seem to outnumber the intelligent people these days.

    Well said.

Personally, I'd like to see suffrage go back to people that have a vested interest in the country. Landowners, military members, etc.

Not voting is still a vote, of sorts.

I also agree that it is a right.

What we do need, however, is more educated and intelligent voters at the polls. Voters that have studied the issues and can make an intelligent voting decisions based on the facts.

A compulsory vote might accomplish the above (the counter argument being they already vote), and one could argue that masses of idiots voting might well just cancel each other out (the law of large numbers, and even odds).
Although I think the conservatives have far less idiots... Ever hear that radio guy (Sean, Bill?) do street interviews in NYC? Clueless zombies voting liberal, don't know why.
