I live in California. If your dog chases squirrels here, you take him to a dog psychiatrist to try to quell the inner aggression, and put him on ritalin to mellow him out. I hate this place. I love the weather, and the Central Valley (where most of the real squirrels are, as opposed to San Francisco and points west!) LB, bring your dog out here. He/she can be ruined in a few days!

I lived in Monterey for a little while. Nice view, and I always thought I could go back there, but now I care about my 2A rights.

I've hunted them over a Dachshund, the dog would track 'em to a tree then bark tree until you shot the squirrel. One day the dog treed 2 in 2 trees at once and ran herself ragged running back and forth between the two trees.

Just put a bushy tail on that dog of yours, and you got yourself a squirrel.

When he gets out of the yard he is as hard to catch as one too.

I'm thinking about trapping one anyway. Took my dog to the park this AM to let him chase squirrells proper (instead of having to call him off when they run up someones private tree). He's fast and came within 3 inches of getting one. He seems to be mystified when they go up the trees, though. He can't seem to understand that they go up the tree. Hence the need to trap one, the get him going after it then slowy pull it up a tree with a rope. (read that tip somewhere) He also desn't bark at them, he just tries to get them. I need him to tree one, then bark.

    Your dogs doing fine!
When the dog runs him up the tree
You have a seat and wait
The dog will tire of messing around the tree
By that time the Bushytail will have forgotton you
when the dog moves off , said critter will slip around the tree
    BOOM make meat

    works for me

The best way to train a squirrel dog is with another squirrel dog that is a veteran.

Squirrel dogs are in common use here, and very popular. When training one up, teaming it up with another dog that has done it before teaches it everything it needs to know. It forces the younger dog to focus on the task at hand and not wonder what it is supposed to do the whole time.

The hardest part is breaking them from the habit of chasing deer. Once they figure that out, they got the rest of it pretty much whooped.
I would rather stand against the cannons of the wicked than against the prayers of the righteous.
