    Question What Did He Say?

    There is a story in my local newspaper today concerning an investigation by the State Department's Inspector General's Office into allegations that Blackwater USA illegally transported arms into Iraq. The story relates that during the probe, the IG himself sent a memo to the chief of the IG's investigative unit, and prefaced it thus:

    "Please do not treat anything in the e-mail below as having been seen by me, advised to me, or understood or approved by me. If there is something significant in the message below, please come and tell me about it".
    This is bureaucratic double-speak at its finest!

    It means "I'm forwarding this e-mail because I think someone might be in trouble, but I'm too busy to dig any deeper--or I might uncover something embarassing that I might be held accountable for--instead, I'll let you figure out what is going on and wait for you tell me to do something."

    I think it depends on what format the email was in. Normal people write emails that are legible - in the military that is not the case. Orders get emailed around that are pages and pages and pages of continuous letters and number - all in caps, with no indentations or paragraphs or any of that fancy stuff. I sure wouldn't want to read them....but I do think it is probably this guy's job to do just that, and he tried to pawn it off on someone below him so he wouldn't have do it. Bad move...
