Here in Mesa (east of Phoenix), we routinely see coyotes crossing roads heading for the citrus groves to feed on rodents. Every once in awhile you will see them with a housecat or small dog in their jaws heading back to their den. I've never heard of them bothering larger dogs around here, but cats and small "foofy" dogs seem to be on their menu quite often....

I live in the country and there are plenty of coyotes around. I hear them almost every night I am out stargazing and see them crossing the road or fields not all the time but commonly. They tend to have 'runs' or fairly regular routes from one field to another. Every one I have seen is very skittish with humans and runs as soon as they identify you. I worry about the coyotes which are now adapting to suburbia. I have friends in Dallas suburbs who see them. What is frightening is that those coyotes will evolve towards losing their fear of humans and more and more people will suffer coyote bites.
