Americans Forced to Pay U.N. "Globotaxes"?

A worldwide tax -- including American citizens -- to support the United Nations? Taxation without representation for the citizens of a nation founded in revolt against that very concept?

It's being seriously discussed -- and the supposedly anti-tax Bush administration hasn't raised a peep. Indeed, the Bush administration is participating in the discussion.

The U.S. government, at the G8 nations meeting earlier this month, agreed to create a working group proposed by France, Germany, Italy and Great Britain to consider carrying out "innovative financing mechanisms" to "help deliver and bring forward the financing needed to achieve the [U.N.'s anti-poverty] Millennium Development Goals."

Among the "financing mechanisms" to be considered is a "solidarity contribution on [international] plane tickets." This tax would bring an estimated $3 billion or more annually to the U.N.

And that's just the beginning, of course. Notes columnist Frank Gaffney Jr. in The Washington Times:

"If the United States goes along with this arrangement in September, it will allow a precedent to be set for taxation without representation that would send America's Founders spinning in their graves. It can forget about the modest constraint its ability to withhold "dues" has exercised on U.N. behavior. It can be sure real U.N. reform will not be in the cards. And it can expect other globotaxes will soon be proposed."

    Like what? Gaffney continues:

"The mother of all globotaxes is an idea that has been kicking around the East River for some time and named after the Yale Nobel Laureate who first proposed it, Dr. James Tobin. The "Tobin tax" would theoretically raise an estimated $13 trillion -- yes, trillion -- from a small levy on international currency transactions. Imagine what the One Worlders and U.N. bureaucrats could do to our sovereignty and interests with that kind of wherewithal."

    Concludes Gaffney:

"If the Bush administration is unable or unwilling to resist such globotaxes, it will fall to the Congress to do so. With the August recess looming and the U.N. fund-raiser coming right after Labor Day, there is no time to waste."

Now more than ever, it's time to get the U.S. out of the U.N.!

Ex - I could say much - when it comes to ''things UN'' - many know my take but to express this fully would offend Bumper - have me thrown off and probably amaze most with my degree of invective!

You know what I find interesting?

I came to the same conclusions about the UN that most of the forum shares long before I ever found this forum.

As for the UN they can go

Fill in a string of expletives in place of the things.

    Hotguns.

It may not be hard to figure, but it sure is hard to stomach.

I hate the UN, the concept is a sound one (at least I used to think it was when I was in public education, but I haven't done the extensive research on it to comment on this). Anyway, the idea of trying to keep peace between the member states works, until you start throwing most of the petty politics into it.

It's like communism, great on paper, horrible in reality.

The US needs to be OUT of the UN. Period!

I had a young adult (not sure of his age, but between 19 and 25) tell me that Bush is going to be the undoing of the world, and the Europe will rise and save the world. (yes, the kid is from Europe, and he falls to the extremely far left.)

I was tempted to ask him when the last time Europe had saved anything without our help, but figured that wasn't a good move, as the crowd generally seemed to be supporting him.

Again....to the UN....GRRRRR and double GRRRR (esp. after the gun debate from last fall between the NRA and IANSA)...

The UN as it exists, today, is so far from the body that Eleanor Roosevelt envisioned. Arthurian ideals of a round table dialogue among equals. The UN is failing for the same reasons the League of Nations failed, and for the same reasons the Round Table was sundered. Instead of a place for dialogue between nations, the UN has tried to redefine itself as a supergovernment, with authority over member states. It has become a seat of greed, graft and corruption, led by small-minded people with selfish aspirations. As with most ideals, the reality falls far short, and cannot help but disappoint. It is past time for the US to remove itself from the UN.

The UN is nothing more but a bunch of tin pot dictators that cannot even manage to handle their own countries problems with out screwing it up, that is why they want to be the emperor's of the world.
I say if we have to start paying taxes to help support them then let's charge them rent, back rent, parking fees, property taxes back property taxes, and anything else we can charge them for their use of US property i.e. the UN building and it's associated grounds, this I estimate to be in excess of 700 billion with interest penalties and fines. Further if they cannot come up with the total payment in cash funds then we get to evict them. Too be fair about this they can have 90 days to come up with the funds, and none of them damn Euros either make it in gold bullion.

Get us out of the UN

Anyone that thinks the UN is a viable solution to the various world problems needs to get their head examined. The UN, by definition and conception, is "one world" government. It is a corrupt group of free loaders and socialists that are the antithesis of everything that made America a great nation. Sadly, we are slipping more and more into dependence upon government for everything. Think that's extreme? Look at all of us. We have to get permission from our respective state governments to carry a firearm. What have we become? We need to tie a can to the UN, kick them out of the US, and stop pouring money into this cesspool.

Well lest see, first we ask our legislators if they would be interested in 700 B in funds for their pet projects, then once we have gotten their attention then we suggest the above. The crazy part is they might just go for it.
