Continuation from the "To Scope or Not to Scope" Thread...
I did get to go hunting this weekend. We went out deer/hog hunting. I was lucky, and a little buck walked out just after 20 minutes of being in my stand. I shot it while the others were walking to there stand.
I have posted some pics on another site to help along the discussion of is a .223 a good round for hunting medium game. The pictures on the site say to me...YES, it is a good round for hunting medium game, and it is not the worst by any means. A well placed bullet does way more than bullet size. Guaranteed.
Even though the damage was severe I did manage to get most of the meat from the animal. All but the two shoulders, neck and ribs were harvested. It was a humane shot, and penetrated both shoulders, hitting the heart and lungs on the way through. The bullet penetrated an estimated 18".

.223 is probably good for deer....but in Virginia you have to use a caliber larger than .22........so I've been using .45-70!

Washington requires .24 or larger. When I was a child we hunted everything with a single shot .22 LR. There was a few Black tail deer taken with them.
However many of them had to be tracked. After my parents divorced, we upgraded to 25-20, 25-35, 30-30, 38-40, 303, 45-70 and 300 savage.
More meat harvested and less time tracking.
The 22LR was religated to squirrels, rabbits, porcupines, racoons etc.
Plus after dad was gone, mom insisted that we were legal while hunting.
Dad never bothered, his rational was that as an Indian subsistance was our way of life.

I would like to add that it is legal for me to hunt whitetail with a .223 where I live. This is not an illegal hunt for me!!!

Great link! Also a good example that deer are pretty easy to take down. Shot placement of course.
