Teacher drives to school with BB rifle on car

    http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/...l_tab01_layout

Rene Stutzman | Sentinel Staff Writer
    11:33 AM EST, December 21, 2007

"A second-grade teacher at Forest City Elementary School in Altamonte Springs has been placed on leave after he, by mistake, drove to school with a Red Rider BB rifle on top of his station wagon.

Jon Diesbourg was sent home yesterday after being questioned by Altamonte Springs police.

He told them his wife had used the BB gun to separate pet pigs because they had gotten into a fight. She had set the rifle down on his Ford Escort station wagon, and he, unknowingly drove it to work, according to police.

The BB gun was still there, on or near the car's luggage rack, when a parent spotted it yesterday on school property. A school official then called police.

The teacher, a 31-year district veteran, was not arrested. Police asked the state attorney's office to determine whether any laws had been broken.

School district spokeswoman Regina Klaes said the district was doing it's own investigation. She said it is a violation of district policy for an employee to have a weapon on school grounds.

The district investigation, she said, would determine whether the BB gun is a weapon.

Diesbourg is on a paid leave of absence, she said."

    Wow.

Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill.
Paid leave for a BB gun...that they cant even tell if its a "weapon."

I guess thats why everyone carries them to war.

Oh wait...they dont. Getting hit with a BB traveling at 220 FPS just dosent seem lethal enough to me.

As a public-school educator, nothing in public education surprises me anymore. We're the "United Kingdom" of American society (no offense meant to anyone).

Ya, I just saw that. Talk about being ridicules

    My how things have changed

I remember back in the 70’s when I was in high school; I got permission for my 11th grade speech class presentation to do a show and tell about how 18-century flint lock guns worked and did a demonstration.

I was required to stop by the principles office for them to confirm they where unloaded, and to make sure nothing other than black power was being fired.

We use to be able to carry a knife so long as it was under 4-inches and the high school ROTC taught marksmanship with 22 on campus, and AR16 when we visited bases.

Zero tolerance bites again ....... and gets ever more ridiculous.

Honest mistake IMO - like the person at airport recently with gun in carry-on - who got off.

It's time zero was upgraded, to at least some small positive number.

Why are we surprised. We now have schools (school boards) kicking kids out for drawing a picture of a gun.

I'm not sure about the rest of the country but in FL we elect school boards. I think we need to pay attention to some of the "fine print". Personally, I never thought to ask our candidates what they would do if a teacher arrived with a BB gun on their roof (or a student made a picture of a gun). Time to get more involved.
