He wasn't even in the car when it hit the water. The roof of the car collapsed enough to prevent the doors from opening and windows were rolled up when the car was pulled from the water. Unless she rolled the window up after he swam out then there is no way that he got out of that car.
Also she asphyxiated. She didn't drown. Some estimate that she lived for several hours. You should read Teddy's inquest testimony. It's fairly interesting.
