I've read several versions of this story. This one I suspect is probably how it happened. I've always liked this story and was reminded again of it today on the History Channel. I remember having read about this in school, but the link you provided was a great detailed account. It's an amazing story to contemplate. I don't think today's world could ever host such an event.

That was a great article but I doubt that could ever happen today. We must remember that the war at hand in 1914 was between two sides that were both Christian. As a result, they shared the same holiday in Christmas.
Now, a truce on Christmas would be unthinkable as the current war we find ourselves in is between a Christian side (us) and a Moslem side (them) and thus, a truce of a shared holiday is not possible.
Can you imagine meeting the enemy on friendly terms, probably talking about life back home, family, etc...getting to know that man as a person rather than just "the enemy", knowing you will be trying to end each other's lives the next day?
I think ignorance of the fact that the enemy are people much like ourselves, with families, lives, etc. fighting for what they believe in, makes it easier to fight. I know when I had the .50 cal trained on people with AK's and RPG's on rooftops in Iraq, I did not think of them as people...only "some guy who may try to kill me".
Wasn't there some part in Band of Brothers where the Germans and Americans were in the trenches all singing Silent Night together?

Yes. A story of combatants in a bloody war taking a break from killing eachother to participate in some "peace on earth goodwill toward men". Those were different times.Quote:
