    Talking Radar speed detection

I have no way right now of verifying this - and fully suspect it is 100% spoof but - hey - it made me chuckle!!

Police Radar, not just for speeders anymore

Two California Highway Patrol Officers were conducting speeding enforcement on I-15, North of MCAS Miramar. One of the officers was using a hand held-radar device to check speeding vehicles approaching near the crest of a hill.

The officers were suddenly surprised when the radar gun began reading 300miles per hour. The officer attempted to reset the radar gun, but it would not reset and turned off.

Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact locked onto a USMC F/A-18 Hornet, which was engaged in a low flying exercise near the location.

Back at the CHP Headquarters the Patrol Captain fired off a complaint to the USMC Base Commander.

Back came a reply in true USMC style:

Thank you for the message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Hornet had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked onto your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it.

Furthermore, an air to ground missile aboard the fully armed aircraft had also automatically locked onto your equipment. Fortunately the Marine Pilot flying the Hornet recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile system alert status and was able to override the automated defense system before the missile was launched and your hostile radar was destroyed.

    Thank you for your concerns.

    Spoof:

quickly responded to the missile system alert status and was able to override the automated defense system before the missile was launched and your hostile radar was destroyed.
Now I'm no fighter pilot (But I have watched Top Gun) but I don't think that air to ground missiles can fire themselves.

    LOL...
I remember at China Lake, the base cops there were warned not to train the radar guns on the aircraft. One guy didn't listen and a few of us watched him as he fried his radar gun for doing just so.... brings back memories...

I've sent a letter to Arizona's DPS warning about similar circumstances with Harleys. They just don't seem to respond!

Its total BS, but funny. For kicks, I've gone down to the local small airport to run radar on the runway. Cessnas dont have missles, so I figure it was safe to do so.

Got to be a spoof. No projectile could be allowed to automatically fire at will. They have to be activated by a human. There may be alerts telling the pilot what weapon it may reccomend using. Also I saw this post somewhere else, but it happened overseas.

Military Electronic Warefare is something I know a little about. While the stroy is false the first part could be partially possible. The aircraft onboard system could detect the Officer's radar gun but the jamming pulse sent out at that close a range to such a small receiver would have ruined the speed gun.

Lived on a military base in Alaska's Aleutian Islands for 7 years. One year we had a visit from some 'Top Gun' pilots. They did some fly-by's for our school's 9th graders down at the airport. When flying at high speeds, you don't even see them as they go by...it's just an 'eye blip'...

    I don't know if this really happened...matters not...good story!
