Makes case ideology is mental disorder

WASHINGTON Just when liberals thought it was safe to start identifying themselves as such, an acclaimed, veteran psychiatrist is making the case that the ideology motivating them is actually a mental disorder.

"Based on strikingly irrational beliefs and emotions, modern liberals relentlessly undermine the most important principles on which our freedoms were founded," says Dr. Lyle Rossiter, author of the new book, "The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness." "Like spoiled, angry children, they rebel against the normal responsibilities of adulthood and demand that a parental government meet their needs from cradle to grave."

While political activists on the other side of the spectrum have made similar observations, Rossiter boasts professional credentials and a life virtually free of activism and links to "the vast right-wing conspiracy."

For more than 35 years he has diagnosed and treated more than 1,500 patients as a board-certified clinical psychiatrist and examined more than 2,700 civil and criminal cases as a board-certified forensic psychiatrist. He received his medical and psychiatric training at the University of Chicago.

Rossiter says the kind of liberalism being displayed by the two major candidates for the Democratic Party presidential nomination can only be understood as a psychological disorder.

"A social scientist who understands human nature will not dismiss the vital roles of free choice, voluntary cooperation and moral integrity as liberals do," he says. "A political leader who understands human nature will not ignore individual differences in talent, drive, personal appeal and work ethic, and then try to impose economic and social equality on the population as liberals do. And a legislator who understands human nature will not create an environment of rules which over-regulates and over-taxes the nation's citizens, corrupts their character and reduces them to wards of the state as liberals do."

Dr. Rossiter says the liberal agenda preys on weakness and feelings of inferiority in the population by:

    creating and reinforcing perceptions of victimization;
satisfying infantile claims to entitlement, indulgence and compensation; augmenting primitive feelings of envy; rejecting the sovereignty of the individual, subordinating him to the will of the government.

"The roots of liberalism and its associated madness can be clearly identified by understanding how children develop from infancy to adulthood and how distorted development produces the irrational beliefs of the liberal mind," he says. "When the modern liberal mind whines about imaginary victims, rages against imaginary villains and seeks above all else to run the lives of persons competent to run their own lives, the neurosis of the liberal mind becomes painfully obvious."

Not "news", but an interesting analysis from a different quarter. I'm looking forward to reading it.

SPOT ON! Great post; I am going to share this with all of my liberal brethren, just as soon as I finish paying for their yearly NRA memberships!

I remember my dad saying years ago,...Way before I ever payed attention to politics,...That he really had a hard time fathoming that liberals honestly, truly believed the things they said they stood for.

I suppose all this depends on how you define a liberal.

Saw this on another site - interesting article. I don't like psychology/psychiatry in general...seems like a lot of power to be putting in an individual's hands. Socialism - that's liberalism to me. JMO

Mr. Stuart - that's a VERY good point. We're sending our daughter to a school ranked as one of the nation's 50 "top schools for conservatives, old-fashioned liberals, and people of faith," according to the Intercollegiate Studies Institute's new college guidebook, All-American Colleges (2006). But frankly, according to modern standards, it is so conservative it leaves most of today's 'conservatives' in the dust. I'm pleased to say, though, that it is a reasoned and thought-through conservatism.

Liberalism USED to mean widening one's viewpoint, and examining all of the critical ideas through the development of Western Civilization, the better to analyze our current culture. I doubt Dr. Rossiter is criticizing this sort, but rather the knee-jerk current batch of "liberals" who parrot media sound bites rather than thinking for themselves. Of course, some conservatives as well merely spout what the Republican party tells them to (snort), and those folks need to wake up, too. A reasoned conservatism sure beats the knee-jerk variety.

Frankly, I would be proud to be called an "old-fashioned liberal", as it appears that much of what passes for conservative ideology today stems from a clear view of history and human nature/behavior over the centuries - from a true "liberal" view. It sure seems like the principle of "taking responsibility for oneself" is easily derived from the great works of literature and philosophy. And, Mr. Stuart, I'm not sure whether you were offended by the large-brush label in the article (hope not), but I'm guessing that we are brothers in much of our outlook, and I appreciate you pointing out the problem.

I didn't need a shrink to tell me that liberalism was a mental disorder.

All one has to do is look around and pay attention. Educated liberals rank right there with educated idiots. Liberals are nothing more than cannon-fodder.

But hey, somebody's got to do it.
I would rather stand against the cannons of the wicked than against the prayers of the righteous.

We will be much better off when we learn to deal with things as they really are, instead of how we wish them to be!

I'm with you Paymeister - but I think Libertarians fall somewhere in there too. Big difference between a "liberal" and a "libertarian"....kinda funny. Lots of semantics right?

Love this post. I printed it out. It is hard to imagine the Dem's are ready to nominate a Presidential candidate who attracts the lunatic fringe of the liberal world.
