Auto insurance....my screw-up!!

We had a full size van we had that we hauled our miniature horses in......we parked in in April to do minor repairs to sell it. I cancelled the insurance because we weren't driving it and then we sold it on ebay.
Since then, the Ohio BMV sent me a letter for the "random" proof of insurance check for the date of June 1st which I didn't have it on it at that time. So even though the van was parked and not in use during that time, as of September 6th, my drivers licence AND all vehicles registered to me will suspended for 90 days and I have to pay a $125. reinstatement fee. I also have to get the SR-22 insurance and carry it for 3 years. I have a court date to request limited driving privledges for school and to help my parents if needed because my step-dad is terminally ill and mom needs help sometimes.
I will have to transfer the minivan to my hubby so he has a vehicle to go to work in. What a mess! Guess that'll teach me not to read the fine print when I sign my name to being financially responsible. But I still feel it's too much for an honest mistake. :chairshot
If there are those that are not aware of this, hopefully I can save someone the aggravation I'm going through by learning from my mistake.

Reminds me of my son and his bike coupla years ago. He had it in garage all winter but because he did not re-insure, the In's Co wrote the licence authority to tell em.

The when he went to renew his licence plate - wallop - no go and he actually lost his personalized plate.

Might wanna call a lawyer. Usually a loophole or two around that us mere mortals are not aware of and the BMV certainly isn't going to tell you about.
Most lawyers will give you a no charge initial consult, so it should be painless.

I ran into a very similar issue here in VA with my motorcycle before I sold it. When I went to court I had a witness there to attest to the fact that it wasn't driven and the judge let me off with the standard idiot fine of $25 and court costs. You should have this cleared up in court shortly.

if your not going to be driving the vehicle it's really worth the time to go to the dmv and get the PNO (planned non-operation) registration for it. It's a major hassle but saves a lot of trouble down the line. Hindsight is always 20:20 as they say :( Good luck with fighting that one.
