LE Career Starts Today
My friend works as a Correctional Officer for a prison in Galveston TX. He talked ot his commander and they are sendin gme an application, and greatly narrowing my waiting period for getting hired. Hopfully if all goes well I pass the test and interview and I can start working at the county jail there, then after a year or so I can go to their state academy and work at the local Prison!!

Just make sure you end up working on the right side of the bars!
Congarts!
You have to make the shot when fire is smoking, people are screaming, dogs are barking, kids are crying and sirens are coming.

Sounds an encouraging start.
Armoredman can probably give some useful comments for you.

We'll put you in the academy right now. http://www.adcprisoninfo.az.gov/index.html
I do understand Texas DOC is part of their DPS, and working thier may make it easier to springboard into general LE work.
Working in a prison requires three things - an ability to disbelieve everything anyone wearing orange says automatically, and the ability to think very fast on your feet. The most important? The ability to talk your way out of a situation fast. When there are 100 of them, and one of you, with a can of OC and a radio, the fasttalk skill can be very handy.
Don't be nervous, working in a prison can be dangerous, but so is driving to WalMart, getting out of bed, or lany other job. It can be very rewarding, and boring. Thin like a fighter pilot...long periods of boredom punctuated by brief periods of intense excitement....
If total government control equals safety, why are prisons so dangerous?

Never cross the line - be firm fair, and consistant. Never do ANYTHING out of policy for an inmate, no matter what. Policy will save your butt - learn it letter perfect. It will tick off the fellow staff who love to cut corners, are lazy, and don't give a crup anymore, but it will save you in the end.
The worst thing is, you really have to watch out for your fellow staff more than the inmates. Stupid games like air samples in the pods, or the window press check. Sent anyone for an I. D. 10 T form? Or a F. 15 H? I always told them it was in the G.U.L. Able file....
Then again, when you find out how decent this job really is, then it gets to be enjoyable. I like it.
