Could be a webcrawler of some sort. Search engines (and others) use them to explore pages to determine content so as to be able to index them. They're basically bots that traverse a sites pages automatically.
Here is Wikipedia's definition of a webcrawler/spider.
I could, however, be wrong.

I am the official spider killer to my girlfriend. She saw a little 1 last night and jumped about 3 ft. from sitting on the couch. They don't bother me, but she is deathly afraid of em.
They are the search engine robots spidering searching and cataloging the website. They found us in a big way almost a year ago now....
