Red Bull Air Race Over Detroit River

Very cool for me. I've always wanted to go see one but never had the time/resources to make it to wherever they were. This year it's a 15-20 minute drive from home. Anyone else coming? Maybe we should organize a BBQ???

I also wonder if this turns Bell Isle (A park where carry is legal) into a sports arena or an entertainment facility with greater than 1500 seats (where carry is not legal)?

Nice... I've watched on TV but never in person. It looks a lot more fun to watch than hillbillys driving around in a circle.

As an aviation nut, I've gotta agree wholeheartedly. I just wish they'd let 'em draft and make contact from time to time.

I've got a cousin that lives in San Diego and he sent me a program from their Red Bull race. I was surprised at how small and low powered the planes are. I was expecting that they were running unlimited air craft like they do at those AZ air races where they run 2500 hp engines. These planes are quite small light steel tube & carbon fiber framed aircraft with 260 to 340 HP 6 cylinder horizontally opposed direct drive piston engine. The propeller are 3 blade variable pitched with a max revolution of 2700 RPM. The pilots wear parachutes but have no ejection seats. Actually the planes are pretty low tech and weigh as little as 1100 lbs. They do look like they would be a blast to fly though.

I've never seen the specs on the planes. Just a few minutes of it on TV. That does seem kinda low powered, but light makes for maneuverable.
