Man Charged After Gun Hidden in Oven Goes Off, Injuring 2 Boys

FOXNews.com - Man Charged After Gun Hidden in Oven Goes Off, Injuring 2 Boys - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News

CHICAGO Chicago police say two children were injured when a loaded handgun hidden inside an oven discharged when the stove was heated for cooking.

Twenty-four-year-old Anthony Smith of Chicago has been charged with two counts of endangering the life of a child.

Police spokesman Marcel Bright says Smith apparently had hidden the gun in the oven.

The injured children's sister was cooking Friday afternoon when the gun went off. A 4-year-old boy is in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the leg. His 12-year-old brother was struck on the forehead by a fragment from the gun. He has been treated and released.

Smith, a convicted felon on parole, also was charged with unlawful use of a weapon.

It was not immediately clear if Smith was represented by an attorney.

Yes, brings new meaning to the term "cook-off," doesn't it?

I would think that if a person was using someone elses oven that they would check the oven before turning it on. I always check the oven in my house first , just to make sure no one has put or left anything in it.

I don't necessarily have the sense it wasn't the sister's oven. Perhaps her brother hid the firearm in her house. That is the sense of the story I had...?

I'm with you, though. I always check the oven before starting it to heat. My mother always used the oven as storage for cereal, etc.; so I learned early in life to check.

Yeah, that's the first rule of oven safety: make sure the (cooking) chamber is empty and treat every oven as if it is loaded (literally).
I check the oven anytime, anywhere, before I turn it on.

He didn't use the weapon, the oven did. I wonder if the oven had received it's firearms training from Martha Stewart?

    Obviously, you missed the point.
