MARATHON - A 20-year-old Deerfield Beach woman died after being shot in the chest while inside a hotel room she shared with her boyfriend and another couple, a Monroe County Sheriff's spokeswoman said Sunday.
Investigators were working to determine how and why Andrea Ansola was fatally shot at about 10:15 p.m. Saturday, spokeswoman Becky Herrin said. Her boyfriend and the other couple, who shared her room a the Knights Key Inn when the shooting happened, have been telling detectives stories that "are not consistent," Herrin said.
Here's what they all generally agreed happened, according to a news statement Herrin released today:
Ansola's boyfriend and the couple said they stopped off in Marathon overnight, on their way to a party in Key West. They checked into the motel, located at 40 Kyle Way West, went for a swim, then returned to their room to get ready for the Key West party.
At that point, the boyfriend's handgun came into play. The boyfriend, who has a concealed weapons license, and two witnesses said the gun went off and a bullet struck Ansola below her left breast. Another bullet struck the boyfriend in the right arm.
The boyfriend then asked another motel guest to drive him and Ansola to the hospital and the other couple to call 911. Deputies headed to the hospital and the motel.
Ansola was pronounced dead at Fisherman's Hospital shortly after her arrival. Deputies found the gun in the motel room.
Detectives are withholding the names of the boyfriend and the two witnesses pending further investigation and any charges, Herrin said.
An autopsy will be performed on the victim Monday.
