Boy Brings Grenade To Show-And-Tell - Boston News Story - WCVB Boston

So...neither the teacher nor the principal could figure out that with a huge hole in the bottom and no charge that it wasn't going to go boom? They had to call the police and bomb squad? ***?

    Cape Cod School Evacuated

    POSTED: 1:55 pm EDT April 9, 2008
    UPDATED: 5:25 pm EDT April 9, 2008

BOSTON -- A Cape Cod school was evacuated Wednesday after an 8-year-old student brought a hand grenade to school for show-and-tell.

The boy, who attends the Ezra Baker School in Dennis, told his teacher that he had the grenade in his backpack. The teacher notified the school's principal, who called police.

About 400 students from pre-K through third grade were evacuated as a precaution. Officials said that the boy had a World War II grenade. Upon arrival of emergency personnel, it was discovered that the grenade was inert, the explosive charge and detonator were removed and a hole was cut in its bottom, police said.
The device was taken into custody by Dennis Police and later turned over to the state police bomb squad for disposal.

Students were sent home with a letter to parents reminding them to check their children's backpacks before they go to school.

Gosh, I've had one on my desk as a paper weight since I was a kid...I guess I ought to walk down the hall to the bomb guys so they can take it away for me, I had no idea they were dangerous.

The one on my desk must the most menicing of all inert hand gernades as it is attached to a wooden baseplate with the words "Complaint Department Please take a munber." There is a number one attached to the safety pin. This is really in need of a bomb disposal unit (BS)?

Outrageous enough to evacuate and call the cops at all, but giving a known dummy to the bomb squad? I've got a stapler here they might be interested in...

let's see does that mean pack it full of c-4 add a detonator and blow it up or does that mean when nobody's looking throw it in a garbage can. It's a freeking paper weight, thank god he didn't draw a picture of one without a visible hole in it the poor kid would be going to juvie til he's 18

Which means a member of the bomb squad now uses it for the same thing SIXTO does.

I guess this 8 year old will now have a black mark on his permanent record saying he is a terrorist or something?

These schools are just so afraid of any kind of litigation, they go absolutely overboard. I mean, if they slap a 6 year old with "sexual harasser" for smacking a girls rear end, why wouldn't they really go after this kid?

WHY do you think they call it a DUMMY Grenade? You just saw how all the dummies acted when they saw it.

You KNOW some guy on the bomb squad just took it home and it's a paperweight on HIS desk now.

Now that I think about it, wouldn't there be something illegal about confiscating a non-illegal/non-dangerous lump of steel?

    They are dangerous.
A long time ago, my 14 year old cousin bounced one off of my head. I still have the scar beside my right eye to prove it.

It was an explosion if there ever was one. I saw bright white lights and heard little birds singing.

When people aske me what this scar was from, (and they do) I just tell them it was a grenade. That usually shuts them up...

Every once in a while, one of these turns out not to be so inert.
If I was the teacher, I would err on the side of caution.

It's so hard to explain to a parent when the granade takes
out half the class, and one of the kids was theirs.
