The 15-year-old who shot himself in the face Wednesday night did so after his brother tried to teach him about gun safety, according to a report from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
The boy was listed in stable condition at Halifax Health Medical Center this afternoon.
Just before 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the Sheriff's Office was called to investigate an accidental shooting in Pierson. A deputy sheriff found the boy laying just inside a doorway, his older brother holding a pressure to his wound, what appeared to be a bullet hole in the wall. The tip of his thumb was also injured.
The boy's brother told the deputy that he has been planning in getting his concealed weapon permit and had been teaching his brother about safety. He had left the gun on the kitchen counter and started cooking. The boy picked it up and it went off.
The boy, who was alert and conscious, was airlifted from the home on Olmstead Road.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office has released 911 tapes from the incident.
