My laptop died... I think. Help the computing challenged!

OK, I need some help from the computer gurus here, I think my laptop kicked the bucket. Before we begin, I have to admit I am a computer moron, I'm lucky I can get on and navigate DC.

Heres what its doing, I start it up, and I get the "you've improperly shut down your computer, you have 30 seconds to choose what mode it last operated correctly in" screen.

Then, it goes to a blue screen that talks about memory dump, then restarts, and does it all over again.

Windows XP is what running it if that matters.

Is it dead, or can it be brought back to life?

    Physical memory dump?

If had that come up once or twice, I restart it and it boots up normally, I forget what it means, if you see it often, I'd get it looked at, but it it's a once in the "blue" moon kind of things, I'd not worry about it. I think all three of my work laptops that I've had over the years have shown me that error, and so have most of my co-worker's machines.

    *Note* I'm no expert.

Yes, Physical memory dump... I think it means a physical dump. It does it over and over.

A laptop that physically takes a dump? I'm glad I don't have one of those. At least I don't think I have one....

You don't happen to know what mode it last operated in correctly I assume. If you did, it probably wouldn't help because you'd have to know computer lingo to tell the computer what you want.

I say don't lose hope. Probably if you push F1 or something like that it will be back to normal. Its amazing what some people know about computers!

    Good luck,
    Austin

The dreaded blue screen of death.

I have two suggestions. When it is booting press f8, which should take you to a menu that allows you to select some booting options. You can try to boot in 'Safe Mode' or you can try to boot in the 'Last known good configuration.'

Have you tried to add hardware or drivers recently?

Do you still have your Windows XP install CD? I fixed a very similar sounding problem recently on a friend's laptop by using the "repair" feature of the XP install. Basically, the problem is likely to be a corrupted file that is hosing Windows startup, and the repair can fix it.

If you are less lucky, the hard drive itself is dying, and that is causing the boot problems. In either case, though, the problem is likely with a basic file needed for booting and Safe Mode probably won't help. If Safe Mode works then the problem is likely less severe and maybe just a software/driver issue.

If you need some more help with the XP repair thing, feel free to PM me.

Have you set up a system restore point recently, like in the last week?

Downloaded any new programs or anything?

From what you describe it has not kicked the bucket. You probably need to reinstall the OS. Repairs work (if you have the CD) but you eventually run into problems again. System restore points also work but I still recommend formatting and reinstalling after backing up important files (if there are any).

Need some info on the make and model. Some laptops have a built in restore function instead of a cd.

Let me know and ill help you get it resolved.

Sixto, I would bet a paycheck that it is software. Don't do anything drastic. A fresh install of WinXP, if you don't have a restore point or the repair process doesn't work, should have you up and running.
