Sleep deprivation
I don't know what it is, but there are times when I am up for 24-48 hours at a time, with little to no sleep at all. I usually work nights, and I haven't been to sleep since Wednesday night. I was just wondering how other folks here deal with lack of sleep. I know I'm going to be really tired tonight at work.

Try finding some hard work or do some exercise throughout the day. Maybe lots of Turkey too. (tryptophan)

I get lots of sleep deprivation, usually not by choice. I just sleep as much as possible when I can, in the mean time to stay awake energy drinks and copenhagen help (although not the healthiest for ya), as well as a bunch of other little tricks.
Just keep your mind busy and don't sit down doin nothing in a cozy chair in a room with a good climate.

The excercise is a good idea. I often have a hard time going to sleep. Valarian root helps me sometimes. It's an all natural pill that helps induce sleep. But be careful with any pill. Even if it's "non habit forming," sometimes it's hard to think you can go to sleep if you're used to taking a supplement just because of a placebo effect.

Try some strenuous exercise, as another poster opined.

I get my folks to babysit.

Have you tried any sleep aids?

Yup, cope and monsters are huge with all the grunts here, myself included, although I used both before enlisting.
I'll have to try the hot sauce, can't go out without hot sauce.

I found that cutting caffeine out of my diet totally helped me to sleep better. And I also sleep for less time than I used to and feel more rested.

+1 on exercise, and avoiding caffeine and nicotine after 4pm. I'll occasionally resort to nyquil, but I have to take it by 6pm or I can't get up in the am. (lasts 12-14 hours on me). Thats occasionally though, if I had constant trouble I'd see a doctor or something.

Listen to my Mother In Law tell you some of the most totally boring and mind numbing stories from her childhood and past jobs and vacations.
Guaranteed that will put you right to sleep.
I'm thinking about marketing tapes of her stories to insomniacs.
Seriously I am up a lot and get very little sleep.
4 solid hours is a LOT of sleep for me. Some nights I don't really get any.

I find myself completely comfortable with 4-5 hours sleep per night, although my '20 minute' naps before dinner help a lot...
For times needing sleep, pick up a copy of the Brady Bunch 'reasons' that there should be more gun control...it WILL put you to sleep...

Well, I'm not sure whether it's a disease, or a malady of the brain. I hear about this sleep deprivation now and then, but haven't taken anything out of it. Me? I'm 43 years old and not exactly hyper-active. I think sleep is a waste of time actually. Lots of constructive things to do other than sleep. I get by with 3-6 hours of sleep in any 24 hour period. I probably average just below 4, and I don't do naps in the daytime. After I post this message, I'll have forgotten everything I've said! (no-just kidding) I know it has to have some detrimental side effects, but I'm not able to pinpoint what they might be.
