Crazy Carry Myths
Just wondering if there were any really crazy widespread myths out there about carrying or the ability to ect...
The reason I ask is because I keep hearing one. It is that AD military automatically get to carry anywhere(as well as buy handguns at 18, and buy full auto, ect...). A rumor which guys here one base routinely ask me about since they know I'm a bit of a gun nut, and although it would be nice, it really isn't true. I get the feeling this one is straight out of Hollywood. We have enough restrictions on our issued duty weapons, let alone privately owned handguns we aren't even allowed to keep anywhere but the armory.
Are there any other really prevalent myths you guys know about?

That a "castle doctrine" is going to protect from all evil legal woes.
Since you mentioned military aspect; the assumption that military guys know what they are doing with a handgun; its been my experiance that the vast majority never get any pistol training, and if they do, it isnt much.

Myth: That having a gun means you're able to defend yourself.
That's like saying having a piano makes you a musician.
Self-defense preparation goes far beyond merely having a weapon on the hip. It takes mindset, determination, skill, training that's both realistic and practical. Without those additional things, very likely you'll fumble when the chips are down.
Your best weapon is your brain. Don't leave home without it.
Thoughts: Justifiable self defense.
Explain: How does
disarming victims
reduce the number of victims?

Florida Myth: You can keep a gun anywhere in your car as long as it takes you three movements to retrieve it.
Truth: You do can keep a gun in your vehicle without a CCW as long as it is securely encased. That means in the glove compartment, center console, zippered pouch, holster with a snap, etc.
You have to make the shot when fire is smoking, people are screaming, dogs are barking, kids are crying and sirens are coming.

Not really a carry specific myth but people's concept of "knockdown power" never ceases to amaze me.

Yeah that is a good one; makes me roll my eyes everytime I read something about it. Recently, the thread about the policemen in NY who shot and killed the guy outside of a strip bar..."Why did they shoot him so many times, blah blah blah, in the movies it only takes once or twice..blah blah blah."

Well, there is such a thing as "knockdown power" but it doesn't come standard with most handguns.

That carrying a 1911 style pistol in Condition 1 is somehow more dangerous than carrying it some other way.

That in order to protect yourself and your family you have to be able to group 1 inch shots at 25 yards and be able to draw and fire in less than a second. Phooey.
And my favorite is that by virtue of being a thug a BG is automatically a trained killer. He is not. He is a bully with a tool(most likely stolen) that he is probably very unfamiliar with.
Or that burglar in your home is somehow trained in superior tactical skills so you should hide in your room until the burglar goes away or tries to open your door.

The Myth that FA's and Supresores are totally illegal to own and use by civilians.
The fact is, with the exception of a small hand full of states, is that they are perfectly legal provided you go through a class three dealer and jump through the right hoops to get your $200.00 tax stamp. Know your state laws.

and a big +1 to that

The myth that "printing" is illegal. Not illegal, though it does reveal your carry status to people who are observant enough.
