the quickest brigade run in history

a strange thing happened at PT this morning. we were scheduled for a brigade run and once the entire brigade was in formation(across the street for most of us) they started the usual speeches about what we've done and where were going. the division commander even omes out to give a speech. well at the end ov the division commanders speech he "zonks" us. resulting in an entire brigade charging through a small treeline across the road and back to our respective barracks.

this has to be the shortest brigade run in history.

curious as to which definition of Zonk :

Encarta : 1. transitive and intransitive verb stop functioning: to lose consciousness or become stupefied from exhaustion or an intake of alcohol or narcotic drugs, or make somebody do this

    2. transitive verb hit somebody: to hit somebody very hard

[Early 20th century. An imitation of the sound of a heavy blow]

I'm just curious as I have never seen anyone "Zonk" that many people at one time...

I guess you had to be there...

"Zonking" a formation is a (very) informal way of releasing it. It is done by commanders as a reward for a job well done, or just for the heck of it to get brownie points with the troops.

In bobcat's case, his Brigade was all set to do an organized run for Physical Training (and at the Brigade level, with at least 1,000 people in formation, these can be torturously slow, then fast, then slow, as people "accordian" their way through the run...). Just as they were about to start, the commander "zonked" them, releasing the formation and cancelling the run. Standard Operating Procedure for the troops, in the case of a zonk, is to run like mad out of the area, lest a lower-level commander (or particularly evil squad/team leader) catch his unit and make them do some other form of PT. It's an every-man-for-himself dash away from the PT area, in this case 1,000(+) strong.

So, yeah, I guess you have to be there... :)
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

Why did I hear the theme song from Benny Hill when I read that
"If I was an extremist, our founding fathers would all be extremists," he said. "Without them, we wouldn't have our independence. We'd be a disarmed British system of feudal subjectivity."
