Fatal shooting at indoor range in FL.

I guess this is the correct place to put this. Please move if it is not.

There was a fatal shoting at the range where I work today. Right now it looks like an intentional suicide rather than an accident, but everything is still in turmoil, details are sketchy. For the record, I wasn't there, but got a call from the boss and heard part of the incident over the F.D. radio.

I'm sure whatever the details are it will be a nightmare for the employees on duty, as well as a rash of bad publicity.

Has anyone dealt with this before? Any suggestions for the inevitable interviews and sound bites? Any advice at all? We have not had to deal with a fatality before. There was an employee injured seriously many years ago, before most of us started working there. Nothing like this.

That is just bad. At least he didn't turn the gun on innocent people first. I hope your co-workers will be O.K. after witnessing this.

I would refer any reporters questions to the cops doing the investigation

Be VERY careful what you say to reporters. As I'm sure you've noticed in your fire / rescue career, what you say to a reporter and what they report are often vastly different.....

What range was it? Maybe a hint?

This is truly sad, this happen last year where a kid rented a gun, shot a few rounds and then turned the gun on himself.

As far as media, keep mum. Let your management and the police handle it.
As for dealing with others who've witnessed a suicide, I dunno, other than love, compassion, and prayer,

The news media will take anything you say...quickly forge it into a knife blade and then stab you in the back with it.

The best thing to say to the media after an incident like this is an extremely polite No Comment.

Let the owner of the range make the comments or issue a written statement if he/she wants to.

    Very sorry to hear this...
I am assuming this person rented a firearm and then used it to commit suicide?

That's always the official answer. I just wonder if it sounds bad like there is something to hide that way. I mean, if someone had stepped into the path of a bus on the street out front, they would be just as dead, but it wouldn't be on the news. I dread the "easy availbility of assault guns" sound bite.

Not on the news yet, no links for now. I'm sure by the 6:00 news.

So far, the only thing I see on AP and other FL news sites is a shooting in a mall parking garage around Miami.

I'm in WPB Florida and was heading to the range after work. I call there and they are open for business. This is sad for anyone to go through.

I have heard of a few ranges where people have rented guns and used them to commit suicide. There is no way to prevent it unless the guy is showing signs of irrational behaviour which i'm sure would keep him from getting rented to anyways.

The indoor range on Dale Mabry in Tampa has had at least of couple of these, I think.
