Portland Police Officer Dies After Shooting At His Home
Portland Police Officer Dies After Shooting At His Home - Portland News Story - WMTW Portland
WESTBROOK, Maine -- A nine-year veteran of the Portland Police Department is dead after his handgun discharged in what police are calling a tragic accident.
Investigators said Sgt. Robert Johnsey was apparently preparing his duty weapon for his next shift when it discharged late Monday night at his home in Westbrook. He died a short time later at Maine Medical Center.
The announcement was made by Portland Police Chief Timothy Burton, who said Johnsey's death was a sad and tragic moment for his department.
An autopsy is complete on Johnsey but the state's medical examiner's office said his cause of death is pending further study.
Johnsey, who was 37, is survived by his wife, Carol, and their two children, ages 12 and 9.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

That is just so sad. Now there are two children without a father. I would like to know how his gun just went off.

Accidents happen because people become complacent with guns,I always keep mine pointed in a safe direction, and i never unload my weapon except to clean it,The more you mess around with a gun the higher probability of an ND,

I'll admit I was slightly complacent with mine for a while, but I was fortunate. I've always been very adamant about handling it safely, but there was a moment when I wasn't paying enough attention to the direction it was pointed when it was in the holster. Before I had my MTAC, I kept it in a pocket holster while I was home, and moved it to whatever room I was in at the moment. From time to time I would notice it was pointing down right at my dogs, or to the side towards the room my wife was in. Now, it stays in the MTAC and on my side until I take a shower and go to bed when I take it off, and I am super conscious of it's orientation at all times.
I know that many people aren't, through my own experience, and realizing that I am much more detail oriented than most people I know. Sad for the cop and his family.

I'm sure he took a short cut some where while handling the weapon but sadly he will have no more chances not to make that mistake again. My prayers for his family.

Sounds suspiciously like his co-workers are keeping suicide hushed. The family will get death benifits this way.
