Woman accused of stealing from dying teen

Fayetteville, N.C. ó A Spring Lake woman has been charged with stealing from the dying teenage victim of a street shooting, police said Thursday.

Lakesha S. Lilly, 26, of 1306-B King St., was charged Tuesday with felony larceny after shoes and a cell phone were taken from James Porter as he lay dying, police said.

Porter, 17, of 608 Devoe Ave., had been shot in the head on Jan. 20 and was found behind D&K Tires, at the intersection of Cliffdale and Pritchett roads. Paramedics took him to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said they believe Lilly approached Porter at least twice while he lay unconscious. She didn't render aid or attempt to call for help, they said.

"He was still alive at that time. He didn't pass away until after he had been taken to the hospital," said Jamie Smith, spokeswoman for the Fayetteville Police Department. "She just took his stuff and left him there."

Porter's mother said she was stunned by the charge.

"It's breathtaking and heartrending from the simple fact that someone could come upon a helpless body, and the first thing they could think of was to steal and rob instead of get help," Phyllis Porter said. "The first instinct of anybody was to help."
"If you can't place your shots on a non-moving piece of paper, how much more difficult will it be when that piece of paper becomes a 3-time felon whose sole purpose is to avoid going back to prison no matter what happens and no matter who gets in the way?"

    Disgusting, sickening, and unbelievable!

Proof, if anyone still needed it, that we are living in different times than just a few decades ago....

It is not unbelieveable any more. We recently had the same thing happen with a motorcycle rider when over a brigde in Dallas. It took the LEOs a couple of hours to find him, in the mean time a couple of people took his wallet and .........

    Cold. Heartless and cold.

The "Me" generation's message devolved to "Me, first," which devolved to "Me, at the expense of everyone else." I can't wait to see what's next. No personal responsibility. No parenting. No overt care and concern by society (via administered programs). No wonder so many are growing up devoid of compassion and concern for others, let alone any concern whatsoever for their own integrity and actions. Depressing, that.

I'm going to differ in one little tiny respect to that answer----replace "We" with some, and "our fellow" with their fellow, to read like this:

See, we includes me---I'm not a part of them, and I don't think you are either or I'd hope not. One thing you have to remember when gathering the headlines------we're only seeing the tip of the iceberg.
