Driver with Cooler of Beer Hits Squad Car, Police Say


Dallas police say a driver who was riding around with a cooler of beer in his SUV and was likely drinking hit one squad car and caused another to slam into a fence Thursday night in the Cockrell Hill area.

The squad cars were following each other in the 800 block of South Westmoreland Avenue when an SUV made a left turn without yielding, according to investigators.

Police said the squad cars were traveling the speed limit and did not have lights or sirens on.

The SUV crashed into the first squad car and the second police vehicle swerved to miss the crash. The second vehicle drove up on the sidewalk and crashed into an iron fence.

Police said beer cans flew out of the SUV when it slammed into the squad car and there were cans scattered around the crash scene.

The driver of the SUV was transported to a hospital in stable condition.

The officer in the first car was not injured. The officer in the second police car was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

Police said that officer could have been seriously hurt because an iron fence rod flew through the officer's windshield but stopped short of injuring him.

DWI officers took a blood sample from the suspect who is suspected of being intoxicated.

Charges will likely be filed against the SUV driver.
