I think you can petition the ATF for an import license but be prepared for lots of paper work and headaches

Lord, Grant me a good sword and no need to use it.
I believe that you need to fill out ATF Form 6 and then mail that in to ATF for approval and then a FFL dealer will need to receive the firearm.
I'm not positive that the above info is still correct (things always seem to change) but, you should be able to legally import as long as the firearm is not prohibited for import into the U.S.

There was a thread on this on some forum (unsure if it was DC or elsewhere) recently. Turns out that the FFL who receives it for you must stamp their name/location on the frame as the "importer" per BATFE rules.
I understand it to be a costly and time-consuming process. If it was an heirloom, I'd also object to damaging it by stamping anything else on it that the factory did not.
